First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

My Bob Special strips were cut to .210". 4 oz glass with double layers on the interior and exterior footballs. No stems, though - you'd have to take that into consideration. With a tailor's tape, measure shearline to shearline on your largest form, then divide by your strip width. Without...

    Hammock camper advice

Oh, and at close to freezing, I'd be cold with a pad. But that doesn't say much - I'm a cold sleeper.

    Hammock camper advice

Take the tent. I own 2 hammocks - a Warbonnet and a LittleShopofHammocks Warrior Lite. I spent the better part of 2 summers setting them up in my back "forest". Issues I experienced included numb heels to an earth-shattering headache and several other problems. I have The Ultimate Hang book and...

    Freedom 17 Build

Pitter-patter... Got clamps? One done. No scuppers from the stern to the front of the stern seat. It looks a deceivingly longer stretch than it is - only 36" or so until the scupper start. The other followed soon after. On to the decks... Coating them with resin at this stage was...

    Building a Bob's Special Super video !

Very nice work, although the deck construction had me scratching my head a bit.

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

Of the two I've built, only one has stems. I did not steam them - I clamped a heat gun to my bench and bent them by hand (you can feel the strips "give" when they're heated enough). I used construction lumber (SPF) cut into 1/4 strips.

How is the varnish “Epifanes” correctly pronounced?

Don't get me started - not "pooh-TEEN", "puts-IN" And I've always said E-pih-fanes. I'm trying Flagship this go around.

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

There are different timelines, skill levels, tool and environmental constraints. I think I could probably bang one out in a month if I put my head down. Yet my first one took me about 8 months and this current one has been in the shop going on 14. If I set myself a deadline, that would stress me...

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

I ignore Jim's advice at my own peril, but I too have used the table saw with enough success to make it my method of choice. I have a unifence that I can slide towards me, supporting the work only just passed the blade. I skip the bead and cove and bevel my strips directly on the form, as...

    CNY — yup another one

HI DT. Some of the craziest weather I've ever encountered was between Syracuse and Pulaski on the 81. Where are you heading in QC? I'm just across the border from where they nabbed David Sweat.

    Salty Snacks when Paddling

I'm amazed it took until post #14 for jerky to show up. We buy our beef by the quarter and we get the tougher cuts made into strips for jerky. If it's chilly, lunch will be cup-a-soup or ramen, both of which contain enough salt for about 10 people. Pepperettes are another staple - usually good...

    Freedom 17 Build

You're saying running a round-over bit around the 3 top edges? I'm not sure how I would do that without tear-out or shooting a scupper-spacer projectile across the shop. Hand-filing/sanding does not sound more appealing, but I get the practicality. If I end up using them as lash-points I'll...

I almost spit my coffee out, Jim - you set the bar pretty high. Thank you for the kind words. I had thought about building the seats, but I wanted cane and I get sore fingers just thinking about it. The contoured seats do look comfy but I'd be fairly picky about grain "flow" and would either...

    Solitude isn't for everyone

I was moose hunting in Matane Park. I came around a corner and spooked 5 goldens that were feasting on a gut pile. So they do go for carrion, but given the quantity of it in the park, it might be a localized/learned behaviour. One of the few moments that I would not have minded some company...

The Latest Dope on Mosquito Dope: DEET vs. Picaridin

We used to have these net jackets that were made of cotton. Loose netting, like 1/8 - 1/4" - a mosquito or black fly could easily make it through. But you stuck them in a Ziplock and "charged" them with a couple of good squirts of strong DEET. It's easily been 25 year since I last saw one...

    Solitude isn't for everyone

I have found that trying to explain the desires and the nature of an empathetic introvert to an extrovert, while somewhat entertaining, is largely futile. Although it is impossible to say so without implying fault, It is mostly outside of their realm of comprehension. Again, with the qualifiers...

    Freedom 17 Build

It wasn't long after completing my Bob Special build that I got the hankering to build something else. Perhaps a bit bigger this time, maybe we'll give traditional stem construction a try... The Freedom 17' plans arrived sometime in December 2020. I had left over cedar from the last build. I...
