There might be a market for that. ;)

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

While comparing paddles, I was paddling single side. I was in the Moccasin, which has turned out to be the hardest tracking solo canoe I've had, so very little correction was needed.

First swim of the year – Lower Poplar on the Dead (ME)

Not me. I'm not doin' it. Maybe upper....maybe, but not the lower. I've done a few class 2+/3- standing and clean, but you know how these things look smaller than they are in pictures and video. Maybe ask Carp?

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

I did my own very unscientific test yesterday also. Two wood paddles of similar weight. One 54" and straight and the other a 52" BB Viper double bent. The Viper is slightly heavier. I alternated between the two as I paddled several miles upstream, keeping track of how long it took for me to...

    1960s fiberglass canoe restoration?

It looks like a decent enough canoe, but I wouldn't get too carried away with repairs. Check it all over for soft or crunchy spots. If there aren't any of significant size, I think it may still serve well as a dedicated lakeside cabin canoe - where the weight wouldn't be an issue. If it's gone...

    Old Town Tripper Repair

Yeah, I'm going to agree with the last two. But I'll also note that the price of a good used OT Tripper or equivalent is going to vary by location and season. For instance, right now there are several 16'-17' royalex tandems for sale in reasonable range for me going for less than $500. And there...

    Getting in and Getting out

Cobra chickens.... I need to add that to the list with trash bandits, slimerockets, Holstein pheasants, sagerats, and speedgoats. :D

    Sundance Cedar Stripper Refurbishment

Welcome to the forum. I'm not versed in strip canoe construction or repair, but I think you'll find plenty of help here. Following with interest.....

Help gauging any necessary repair work

Both photos look like simple gelcoat damage. If there's no sign of cracking on the inside, I would just fill the gouge and the chip with a little thickened epoxy and call it good.

Nice work, Dana! I always enjoy seeing a good old neglected hull brought back to life.

    That nasty cracked Wenonah Moccasin

I decided to install kneepads. As described in this thread, I ended up making my own from a single yoga block. A little playing with placement while kneeling in the canoe, then outlining the pads with a sharpie. Applied a couple coats of contact cement, allowing time to tack - and this is how...

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

I knew from earlier experience that I'd never be interested in racing canoes, and all my paddling and poling would be for pure enjoyment. So I don't put too much importance on what paddle is most efficient - rather, what feels best to me at the time. But just because we try to emulate the...

A New Challenge: Cats in a Canoe?

Friends well known in the local canoeing community had their cat George with them on every trip. The cat was always riding up front looking over the bow. Seemed like George thought he was a dog. He was also leash trained, and would usually be on leash while on shore.

I hope they were using bow lines. I wonder where you attach those.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

I see this a lot. Mostly with those just starting out with SUP, which is really popular around here - for good reason. (We do a lot of mixed groups on the local water) I tell them, "think broom, not hoe". It usually sinks in pretty quick.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Had to look up tree of heaven. Yeah, that's what the neighbors have. Strange name for that evil Thing. But now I know how to manage them... https://www.thespruce.com/tree-of-heaven-invasive-plant-profile-5184401 I can get some big logs of that for anyone who wants to mill them into strips. :)...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My neighbor has a row of sumac trees that are about forty feet tall and fairly straight. I don't know how good they are structurally, but they'd be a sustainable supply for sure. Invasive buggers.
