    Sleeping Bags

Yeah, I remember fondly a soggy down sleeping bag on an Alaskan glacier. It only took 5 days to dry out... it was a -20F bag, when dry. You're right, I never let that happen again.

Paddling Deaths Remained High in 2021

Aluminum rental canoes used to figure large in drownings - like 60-70%. And here, when they say "kayaks" you can bet that those boats are cheap flatwater rec boats. They should really differentiate between whitewater and sea kayaks, and the ten foot long drag-it-across-the-parking-lot boats. Of...

    Useless gear, equipment and garments

GPS. I have an old and almost dead Garmin Rhino. It was handy when I was doing archaeology surface surveys, but that was it - It's nice to have a precise location to pass on to someone for that type of work. Using it for any outdoor navigation just took my head completely out of the game. I...

    Penobscot 17 Royalex - SOLD

Needs gunnels, seats and thwarts, and maybe some hull work, but it still floats. Used only once. Always stored inside. They don't make Royalex anymore, so these are really in demand! Easy to portage! It weighs only 8 lbs!!! $800.

Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

"Trade Route" 38x56 inches, hand sewn beadwork I finished this piece in 2021. Instead of beading the water as water, I filled it with reports, charts and data about the Yakima River (Eastern Washington). The title refers to the trading of salmon spawning grounds for irrigation. The Yakima is...

Today's photo from the canoe. Checking for boat traffic as I was about to cross the river...thought I'd wait for them to pass.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Good topic. I started mountain climbing as a teenager, and those pre-cellphone/radio experiences definitely color my thinking. Later, I did a lot of back country solo mountain biking in the Cascades, which weren't overnight trips, unless you broke yourself. Those rides were no-fall rides...20...

    Paddling in a lightning storm

Yes, but they weren't canoeing. But they were next to trees and a metal fence.

Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

I have a wrist watch, a camera and a headlamp. My phone is off and stashed in a waterproof case. I learned pretty quick that computing stuff and GPS just takes my head out of the place that I want to be. So, I'm least likely to give up the wristwatch, and I've already dumped the GPS.

    Paddling in a lightning storm

I always think, "path of least resistance". Get to shore or close to shore. Be lower than the surroundings. Don't stand next to the neighborhood "lightning rod." Under trees is good, but the tallest tree in the forest is bad. Don't lean up against or touch the metal fence. If there are...

    Photo of the day

Okay, it's a photo of my artwork, but it's canoe artwork. Title - "Trade Route" 38x55 inches, hand-sewn beadwork. Self portrait on the Yakima River in 2010, just above the Yakima Canyon. Instead of beading the water surface, I beaded text, maps and charts from reports about the river (yes...

Wood paddles - which style and maker do you like?

I make my own, hand carved out of one, sometimes 2 pieces of wood (side scraps glued together). straight shaft, oil finish My favorites for solo are wide beavertails. I like the fat part of the blade in the water for the j-stroke. My current paddle is spanish cedar (cigar box wood). Stable...
