No problem. The original question was wide open - people carry different stuff depending on where they are paddling. I wouldn't use the fanny pack if I was paddling any real whitewater.

I should have noted that I mostly paddle alone and avoid whitewater other than the occasional rip roaring class 1. I have a swift water rescue cert. and you're right on about watching for gear hang ups. I'll keep the fanny pack.

Knife, whistle, a few snack bars in pfd. I wear a fanny pack bailout bag with keys, phone, wallet etc. in waterproof case, basic compass...and whatever depending on the trip.

I worry more about people than I do bears.

Boy Scouts for the basics. Reading books for the rest of the paddling stuff. My backcountry skills come out of a lot of mountain climbing. My only water related classwork is a swiftwater rescue course. I was a raft guide for a couple years.

I used my solo for several years. I put a kneeling thwart in it. Before that i paddled it backwards from the bow seat with a bucket of water for ballast. It works. it's such a good all around canoe.

The best trails in the Cascades were not the PCT. There was a lifetime of much better hiking to do there without getting on that overused highway. The few times I saw the PCT, I was impressed that it was jeep trail wide...that's a lot of people that can't stay on a trail.

I lived for 27 years in the NW. I agree with Mason's interpretations. I am skeptical of the cougar video and feel that we are not seeing the entire story. I suspect that the video is in part, a set up, either by baiting a cat or intruding on a known den or kill site. That just wasn't stalking...
