    Winter Swimming?

I have family in Ireland that swim in the ocean year round. It may be more common than I thought. I just assumed they were nutty like the rest of the family. I was in a hot tub outside earlier today… not sure that counts. Bob

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

You are correct- it is a 16’. My mistake. Bob

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Soloized Old Town 15’ 50 Pounder- my favorite canoe I own so far… 14’ skin on frame pack boat I built a few years ago- I don’t care for the pack sit on bottom style, but it’s what I wanted at the time. I have plans to soloize a 15’ Old Town Penobscot and rebuild a solo 15’ Peterborough Lite...

How is your winter so far?

The lake I’m on locked up with ice last evening, but will be wide open in a couple days. High 40s F for a few days straight… 🙄 Not much snow to speak of. Bob

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

Similar shirts to Robin. Specifically Duluth quick dry vented fishing shirts (lots of pockets with roll up sleeves) and Pendleton wool shirts. Layered with merino wool base layer as needed. If it is really cold a wool sweater as well. For pants I like Duluth quick dry and their lined fire hose...

How do you inflate your air mattress?

My newish Exped mat came with a rechargeable pump. I can get a few inflations before it needs charged. I have a power bank with me anyway. No issues. Bob

    Winter footwear preferences?

I personally don’t unless it is too warm for what I’m wearing. If I’m still hunting for hours or fishing, I have to use toe warmers to be comfortable so maybe it’s just me. Bob

    Winter footwear preferences?

LL Bean hunting boots if it isn’t too cold. Irish Setter Pac boots with wool liners if it’s below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and I’m out for a couple hours or if I’m sedentary. Both worn with thin synthetic liner socks and wool socks. Bob

    Composite canoe storage questions

I have a similar system under a covered deck/porch. Kevlar, wood/canvas, fiberglass, and Royalex canoes are all kept there year round with no issues. This would be cost effective and simple to add to your current setup if you had concerns. Bob

What Do You Do In Winter ?

I usually have a canoe or woodworking project in the wood shop, a classic car or truck that is in some stage of restoration, fishing flies to be tied, books to read, shuttling kids to sports, and planning canoe trips I hope to make the following year. I fish and hunt regularly till January...

    2023 Fund Drive Now On

Glenn- I sent a check several days ago. If you haven’t gotten it by now, I’d say something happened to it. I’ll give it another day or two and send another if need be. Bob

    Litter, garbage and trash

I mostly see beer cans (almost always Bud Light) and cigarette butts at put ins, fishable sections of rivers, and campsites that are easily accessible. It does seem to be getting better over the years. Bob

    Peterborough Litelift restoration

Thanks Pat. That is the same method I use for removing the old rib ends and shaping the new material scarfs. I resaw the rib material from roughcut boards on my bandsaw and shape the tapers by hand. I enjoy using hand tools when practical and the white cedar planes effortlessly. The inwales...

Thanks Jim. Great info. I have read how it “telegraphs” imperfections. I’ll give it some consideration. Bob

    Peterborough Litelift restoration

Thanks Robin. No keel. I’m not a fan. I will cut off some brass Robertson screw heads and glue them in the holes with brass cup washers for aesthetics. I am going to see Schuyler next weekend and will pick his brain about weight differences between cloth and fillers. Thanks. I am slowly...

    Peterborough Litelift restoration

Correct. Same planking and rib thickness as a 50 pounder and other lighter builds. Was thinking airplane filler, but I am open to suggestions from those who have done it. I have used a two part urethane on skin on frame, but I don’t believe this is the right application.
