Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Yes, travel is becoming more difficult and regimented with "wilderness travel" even more so. What else is to be expected when the population of the USA increases by 65.1 million people (nearly 19%) in the 25 years from 2000 to 2025? What percentage have our wilderness and backcountry areas in...

    Black Cherry Phoenix

The color turned out beautifully. I think it looks much better than my "basic" carbon black Phoenix, but I do like the weight of the BlackLite. I also have to agree about helpful attitude of the folk at Northstar. Everyone I talked to was very knowledgeable and willing (happy even) to share...

    Penobscot 17

I had a Penobscot 17 for quite a while back in the early 2000's (2001-2011 if my memory is correct). Did some class 1-2 southern Appalachian waters in it, but mostly used it for lake paddling. I ran it on the rivers without bags and remember that it was a bear to handle once it filled with water!

    Millbrook Outrage

Congratulations on getting the Millbrook Outrage on some nice water. It looks like a nice fun run; did you get any surfing done? I believe that the weight difference between the Composite and the Royalex version should really make the Millbrook shine in speed and quickness. I had not thought...

    Field sharpening

I have carried a small stone on canoe and backpacking trips. It gave me something to do while sitting in a tent during the rain. A couple of years ago I was given a "different" sharpening tool; a Schrade Old-Timer Honesteel and now carry it. It is not designed to take out major boo-boos, but...

    Gerber River Shorty

Glad to have been of help. I had never expected to find a River Shorty after Gerber discontinued them years ago.

    Bears and Meals

When I went to Algonquin back in June, I put my Bear Vault in a dry sack and hung it from a high branch on the downhill side of the tree. I guess that's the "belt and suspenders" way of doing it.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My wife doesn't mind my canoe addiction as much since I bought her one of the 10 1/2 foot, 14 pound Hornbeck "Lost Pond" canoes. Maybe one for her would help your cause. Watch the Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I found my wife's Hornbeck for cheap (really!) on Craigslist. Sometimes...

NO FAIR- ROYALEX AND COMPOSITE OUTRAGES! I'm envious. Its even in a cool color/pattern, too.

    97° F (36° C), 108° F (42° C) RealFeel, in NW Connecticut

For Spartanburg SC, we set a new record today: 39th consecutive days with the high over 90 degrees. The next couple days it should be in the mid-90s, so it looks like the new record will be 41 consecutive days. With the daily heat indexes reaching the upper 90s to upper 100s, it has not been...

    Delivery of New Northwind Solo

That's a fine looking canoe! You and the pup should get a lot of happy miles in that. Be sure to give us a good test report after you get it on the water. Enjoy!

Looks to be a fine time had by all and no one looked hungry. That is SOME breakfast skillet!

    Help to identify canoe?

There was a post on Canadian Canoe Routes (myccr.com) by "cambridgeguy13" back in 2012 that asked for identification of a canoe with "WF" on the bow and stern decks. Unfortunately I could not access the photos of that canoe so I could not see the deck or the hull. Unless it is happens to be...

    Replacement for REI Taj 3?

I have been using an Exped Orion 3 since since 2019. It is my Go-To tent (out of 6 tents) for any trip unless I am going ultra-light, need my 6 person tent for space or a car-camping pop-up tent for rough use and a loaner. I have spent 34 nights in the Orion 3 during conditions ranging from 40...

    Camping with no tent, hammock

I have gone out with just a tarp in non-buggy seasons and bivy sacks when I was trying to keep weight to a minimum. I wore out my old bivy, it might be time to look for another one. Mostly now I prefer to tent. My go-to shelter when going into potentially rainy or unknown conditions is an...

A Week of Canoe Adventures: Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous, Algonquin, and the Canadian Canoe Museum

I may do that next year. If the 2026 WPASCR falls on the usual first full weekend of June and the 2026 Maine Canoe Symposium falls the weekend before, I will probably give this year's original plan a try: A couple of days driving to Maine. Classes at the Maine Canoe Symposium for 3 days...

A Week of Canoe Adventures: Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous, Algonquin, and the Canadian Canoe Museum

I tried out the Hemlock SRT and Peregrine, a Colden Dragonfly and Nomad, a Bell Wildfire, and a FlashFire. I have already had a Flashfire, but just wanted a comparison to what I remembered. I liked the Nomad, but didn't relish the idea of it sitting in a parking lot on top of the car for a few...
