Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

A terrible disappointment. I know how it feels to have to cut short a long awaited trip.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

My understanding is that spiders use venom to kill or paralyze their prey. But most spiders do not have the physical equipment to bite into human skin nor the venom strength to cause major damage. For some reason, those really large spiders do not frighten me. I don't handle them, but they are...

He's now into the Riviere Megiscane on Lac Pascagama. I remember this lac. The beaches were nice as I recall.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

I thought brown recluse was a southern spider. I checked google and apparently there are brown recluse spiders in Ontario but supposedly rare. A good thing to know. Woodpiles are a common habitat for the brown recluse.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

Well, you don’t have to worry about the brown recluse because it hangs out in the south. ;)

It sounds terribly frustrating and, of course, cold.

What polar bears think of kayaks

Most of us don’t have a large number of bear encounters from which we can learn and refine our responses. I bet few people get it textbook right on their first encounter. Especially since even experts and trippers disagree on the “right” response. If she was using the pepper spray for the first...

What polar bears think of kayaks

I think you guys are too hard on her. The tone of her voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard, but her use of bear spray was appropriate. I see some sailboats in the background so presumably she could summon help should the bear make her boat unseaworthy. So all her pleas were unnecessary...

    Day Trip, Apthorp Lake, Florida

I forgot one of the most exciting moments of the morning. Just after getting underway, a trio of Sandhill Cranes few at low altitude right over me. These are big birds. I am aware of that fact, but seeing them so close drives home the point. This was followed by a huge adult eagle taking...

What is your local day paddle?

Nice fish! I'm also glad you got through the t-storm okay. I also use an umbrella in the canoe, more for shade than rain though.

What polar bears think of kayaks

An argument could be made for having a firearm.

What polar bears think of kayaks

It looks to me like the polar bears are playing with toys, not trying to get rid of them.

Question, brought to us from the great mind of Erica - Choosing the Fond du Lac or Cree river?

A good resource for this information is Ric at Churchill River Canoe Outfitters in Missinipe, SK. He knows all the rivers in the area. Churchill River Canoe Outfitters

    Day Trip, Apthorp Lake, Florida

I went out early this morning to one of my local paddling spots, Apthorp Lake near Lake Placid, Florida. The sun had just come up behind the clouds. It was still cool around 7:30 am when I arrived. Apthorp Lake is bigger than it appears due to its many bays. I prefer the bays to the north. The...

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

Agreed. It’s just like wilderness canoeing. People who don’t do it think it is so dangerous when driving to the grocery store kills more people.

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

The article states they were in shallow water and paddled over (presumably unintentionally) a 10 foot gator, which then thrashed capsizing the canoe. In this case, the gator almost surely was startled awake and/or interpreted the canoe as an attack. Florida John is correct; it is mating season...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I kept trying to marry a man who would take the extra load and heavy canoe. ;) But no luck. I can see I’m out of luck with this bunch. But I love you all anyway.
