    Removing duct tape residue

I'm pretty sure it is gelcoat. I just don't know the right words for everything. Thank you, all. I'm going into the city today to try to find this stuff.

    Removing duct tape residue

I’m finally repairing the Colden Dragonfly, previously taped up with extra-strength duct tape. I’m having trouble getting all the tape residue removed. I have already washed with soap and water. I have used fresh tape which lifted off a lot of the residue. Rubbing alcohol did not work. I’m...

    Getting in and Getting out

I’ve used all the various methods identified in this thread ay one time or another depending on the situation. Any of them would be good to try and start with. The best advice I ever got was to keep your head inside the boat until you have your balance outside the boat and the converse. All...

When do you use float bags?

Good point. When I was paddling tandem I could easily get out of my thigh straps. With the narrower solo, I wear only neoprene socks and my feet are small. I can slip out easily. But I do not paddle anything like what you’re showing there.

When do you use float bags?

So you don't kneel and use thigh straps in that kind of water? Not critical. Just curious.

When do you use float bags?

Thank you, recped. I was starting to worry. When I am out tripping for 3-4 weeks, there is no place in my canoe for float bags. All space is taken up with gear and food. All are in dry bags. I am pretty compulsive about making sure dry bags are sealed tightly.

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

I bought an advantage some years ago and sold it soon after. It was difficult to turn. Even worse, if the wind is coming broadside to the canoe, it immediately pushes the canoe in the direction of the wind. I was unable to control the boat. I was told by the man I bought it from that it is...

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

My own son I took canoeing from when he was an infant. He refused the canoe trips and when he finally became an adult he told me he hated camping. Later on I raised a foster girl who took to the water like a fish. She loved every minute. She had her own life jacket, her own pack, her own...

Show pictures of your tent(s) on a canoe trip

This is the tent I used on the Cree River and will be going with me to the Megiscane. It isn’t exactly on a canoe trip. It is set up nearby and there is a pond with two canoes in it. It was a $750 tent on sale for $350. Its official weight is 5 lb 3 oz. This is about as low a weight I could find...

Monster Icebergs: Don't put in at Innaarsuit, Greenland

It would be quite disconcerting to have one of those hanging out near one’s house. Here is a time lapse to get some idea of the movement. 30 sec iceberg

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

If I were unsure of plans and rivers, I’d probably take my Mohawk solo 13’ in Royalex. It is sturdy and handles good enough in most situations. It’s banged up enough that no one would steal it.

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

Death toll 111 so far. 170 still missing. No survivors have been found since last Friday. If one looks at the expense of this recovery phase, I suspect it would pay for those warning sirens many times over. Cellular coverage and internet and radio are spotty in this area, apparently.

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

The current death toll is over 100 people. And I can’t believe how long they waited to close that bridge down. (First video)

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

This morning the news said the river rose 25 feet in 45 minutes. Many of these Western rivers can behave this way. It may not even be raining where you are paddling. Rain upstream can cause flash floods.

    Missinaibi River

If you have the receipt for your US purchase of your canoe, it would be a good idea to take it with you.

    PIctures of celebrities in canoes

I've never heard of her either, but then I don't know most of the celebrities of this era. If one gets on the news, I have to look it up to see who they are.

Rescue on the Franklin River, Tasmania

What impressed me was exactly the same phrase you quote above. I no longer rock hop either. But the point it drove home to me was that simple ordinary things one does all the time, can result in major injury in the wilderness. I broke my ankle a few years ago just going outside the back door...
