Question about Nova Craft tuffstuff repair

I had one 16 foot prospector in regular tuff stuff layup that has held up quite well. I didn't put skid plates on it, and the stem has been quite robust. Another one, a 17 footer in expedition grade tuff stuff was put through the meat grinder a few times, and in many places the gel coat had been...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

There is a lot of wisdom involved in knowing when to call it quits. I've been in that situation a few times, and disappointment was not the key emotion when we finally got out of the mess. Relief and happiness to have escaped unlimited suffering were the key emotions I remember, lol.

    Thigh Straps for Seated Canoeing?

I'm not trying to be a contrarian, just expressing a contrary idea about the necessity of thigh straps in an open canoe. I'm no white water aficionado, and almost all of my white water experience is derived from tripping in an open canoe. However, I have had excellent white water training from...

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

The 6'6 spinning combo is just about perfect for a canoe in my opinion. Not too big, not too small. Run 8 pound line off it, anything heavier, you might have a hard time breaking line from a snag in a canoe.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

We have the Brown Recluse up here, and a bite from one can be devastating. A buddy of mine was in the forest fire fighting industry. About five years ago, their helicopter was forced down by bad weather. That night he got bit by Brown Recluse on his hand, and due to the weather conditions...

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

Thanks for the info. They had corrected the J Brace thing by the time mine was built in Oct of 2024, but it sounds like they also corrected the bed rail problem in yours. I guess I'll send the dealership an email, see what they can do. I have a set of racks ready to go, similar to yours. Other...

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

Halpc, what year is your ranger? Are the bed rails solid, or squishy like mine?

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

I used a set of Canadian tire racks on my old Malibu, it was similar to your car. A clip just attached in the space between the roof and the door, they were quite secure. I can tell you that the new Ranger has its own form of torture for figuring out canoe carrying. The bed rails on the box...

Yup, I am roughly on the same latitude, we are probably still a week or more away from the lakes opening up.

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

No thread drift! However, I must clarify, goats are only for bear defense, pack animals, and eating. Marrying one is out of the question!

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

As I age, my body has produced a litany of barriers that prevent me from enjoying canoe tripping. The main culprits are my Back, my heart, and my dastardly ability to cramp up like a monkey fist late at night. This summer, I want to do a real trip, with ports and stuff, and I want to enjoy it...

    Strip Glue Review

I bought a gallon of Lepages white glue for the current school build, I'm really liking it. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it is grippy, I can push a gap in the strips together, hold it for about a minute and walk away.

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

More pictures would be helpful for a full diagnostic, lol. From the few you have included, my immediate concern would be why is the weave from the glass showing? It almost looks like someone put another sheath of fiberglass cloth on the hull. It appears to me that the hull has been stored...

I hope they've had somewhat warmer temperatures than us, the lakes here are still ice covered, probably two weeks away from opening.

Tour owner jailed for 10.5 years for weir drowning deaths of 4 customers

That's very interesting. There have been a few canoe tragedies in Canada where children have died, and no charges resulted. One of the worst recent ones was a group of Girl Guides who went to a park on the North Channel of lake Huron. It was too cold and windy, so the leaders decided to take...

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

Seems like canoeing is quickly becoming the hobby of the well to do. I can remember not too many years ago when I bought a brand new Old Town poly canoe for $699.00 Canadian. Just looked up the 16 foot Disco, $2200 bucks Can. Seems like all the poly canoes from other manufacturers are coming...
