    Dream canoe dream rigging

This forum is a gem. Thanks, Barry for taking the time to take measurements! Very, very much appreciated. Barry, if I'm reading you right, your recommendation is to have the bow (and presumably stern) bags be about 16" long (from the grab handle/float tanks to around sixth scupper hole from grab...

    Dream canoe dream rigging

Well, I'm in the weird position of trying to outfit a tripping canoe (SRT) that I have yet to take possession of for a long trip slated to start at the beginning of July (not ideal, I realize). Currently, I'm working on end bag flotation--see post above. I've been emailing with Shawn from Fall...

I've always been intrigued by the Mason firebox. Here's a lighter weight version: https://hofmanoutdoorgearsupply.ca/30-fire-box

What was the first river you ever paddled?

The Flambeau river in Wisconsin via summer camp. I was going into 8th grade, maybe.... Retraced that first trip last summer at age 48!

First solo canoe and solo safety

I have an older swift osprey that might be made out of the same material. Anyway, I like it a lot for lakes and rivers. Mine weighs mid-40's I'd guess, though it has aluminum and not wood gunwales.

I spoke with Blue Mountain Outfitters and the end bags they have in stock are these: https://www.nrs.com/nrs-canoe-3-d-end-float-bags/puss Any SRT owners care to opine or share what end bag outfitting they have? Thanks,

    Printing maps?

I was wondering, given the ability to design maps online, if folks use a different scale than 1:50,000 or 1:250,000? I've often thought 1:100,000 might be a good compromise for longish river trips...

    Printing maps?

Thanks, all. I will examine the various options referenced above. I, too, love maps, and now that I reflect on it I'm sure there are some sections (lower Albany in particular--prior to the delta) where 1:250,000 maps would suffice. Poor eyesight aside, I often prefer the large scale as I'm not...

    Printing maps?

My eyes have gotten bad over the years, so I now find 1:250,000 maps difficult to read. I'll look into downloading and printing. Thanks!

    Printing maps?

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip on the Albany river and as I look at the cost of buying the necessary maps, I'm trying to figure out if there's a cheaper approach than ordering $400+ worth of 1:50,000 maps? Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. -tomo

Thanks Waterdog! That's very helpful. Will the 60 liter not fit sideways or is the thwart in the way? Do they make 45L barrels? Lovely!

    Dream canoe dream rigging

Question for SRT owners. Does a 30 liter barrel fit between the seat and rear thwart? What about 60L in that space?

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

My fear is unreasonable given the statistics for sure. I've backpacked in Glacier NP and Yellowstone NP and have paddled once on the barrens, so I've spent some time in grizzly country. In thinking of paddling solo, my worry in going to grizzly/polar bear county is that my fear would hinder my...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Erica, I would guess you are right about men being the biggest danger to a solo woman, sadly. I am afraid enough of polar bears and grizzly bears that I'm only going to solo in black bear country (though Paddling Pitt's photos make me reconsider that notion daily). Can anyone point me to a map...

Stripperguy, that seat looks ingenious. If you have other photos, I'd love to see them. After much pedestal pondering, I think I'd start with seat as installed by Dave Curtis (I like the seat Mr. Deal designed).
