Staying in shape over the cold moons

Good winter activity Black Fly especially if breaking new snow. Using poles as you do is great for keeping those upper body muscles toned as well. Great photo by the way. G.

How many pairs of footwear: in canoe vs. on portage vs. in camp?

Summer = neoprene sock inside a pair of wet water shoes + running shoes around camp. Spring and Fall = high Bogs with heavy wool socks + hiking boots around camp. G.

    Snow? — Where You Are

This photo was taken after the first snow here this winter. . We got about 40 inches. Finally, found the Subie after the driveway was cleared. A week later it was all gone. We got snow since then but more and more winter rain seems to be in our future. Gerald

    Photo of the day

Photo from Nor-West canoe company, a family owned business which completely burned down earlier this week. Beautiful freighter canoes were their specialty during their 70 years of constructing these pieces of art.

    Norwest Canoe Fire

30 minutes from home. Family business. My first canoe was a Nor-West. Beautiful WC canoe. As years went by, they specialized in constructing freighter canoes as mentioned by memaquay. Their WC freighters can be found all over the North and are a favourite of the original peoples. Hope they...

    Tweener Pack

Hey Trailblazer, that L.L.Bean Continental Rucksack seems to be my missing link. Does it fit under a canoe while portaging? Gerald

Thunder boxes, are they good or bad?

Thunder boxes are a must in most designated canoe areas. That said, I've never stepped in human feces in all those years however in La Vérendrye, where dogs are permitted, I know people who have buried their toes in transformed kibble. G.

10 day Quebec expedition by Justin Barbour.

I also enjoyed this return to recoup the canoe vid. I noticed Sako is starting to grey on the lower lip. 6 years old now. Justin reminds me more of the early explorers rather than a modern adventurer. More like it was back when I first started tripping 60 years ago. Not on the same scale, of...

    Physical Conditioning for Canoe Tripping

The replies so far seem to confirm the old sayings, "use it or lose it", "you are what you eat" and "sleep well live long". G.

    Off to The Bay....James Bay

Watched it yesterday (got link off of CCR). Nice vid. You guys carried lots of gear\food and yet seemed to stay pretty dry in your solo boats. I may be wrong, but from the footage it seemed to me the Keno may be better suited to solos than tandems. Any thoughts? Thanks for sharing. G.
