    The Porcupine River

Folks might getting sick of all my trip plans, jumping from one trip to another. It started as the Idaa Trail between Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes in NWT, then because of the travel expense it became the Colville on the North Slope of Alaska. Then because of the uncertainties of Polar...

    Rowing Canoe Rehab

I get to post this here because my wife was looking in craigslist and found a "rowing canoe". It was a peapod rowboat and I got it for a song. Seven million dollars later the mahogany brightwork is about 4 coats of varnish into glowing. You can just about fall into the grain, it's so nice and...

    clip-on telephoto?

I have very nice everything-proof camera. Even I can't wreck it. Problem is it's only 4X zoom and wildlife never comes over and poses for me. So I was thinking about those clip-on zoom lenses for smart phones and wondering if I could rig one onto my camera. Then I thought about connecting...

    Raccoon attacks man in Pa.

I think it's too much work to carry a gun. I've gotten bit by plenty of loose dogs, but I can't think of a time I got bit by a wild animal. I'd be like, "Wait a minute there Mr. Rabid Raccoon, I have to run in the house and get my gun out of the safe and load it up. You just sit there and...

    spray covers

I bought a boat in 2014 that came with a cover similar to CCS. Used it for the first time over Thanksgiving. It was nice for keeping the winter weather, drips and splashes out of the boat. It took a little discipline for loading and unloading gear but by the end of the weekend it wasn't bad...

North Slope while it's still there.

I'm sure the details will change but right now it's 4 of us in two 17' pakboats. Not sure whether we're ending at Umiat or Nuiqsut but we expect to fly to Deadhorse and hope to hire a van to Fairbanks. I'm not the lead planner, so I don't know all the details but we have been in touch with...

North Slope while it's still there.

Somewhere on this board I posted about doing the Idaa Trail from Yellowknife up to Great Bear Lake and on down to the Mackenzie. We had our group planning meeting over the weekend. Logistics, vacation time, and travel expenses all conspired to nudge us into a different trip altogether. So...

    The passing of Mike Krepner

About 20 years ago, Doug Doremus mailed me a newspaper article from Lubec Maine. In it Mike Krepner talked about his dream of forming a canoe trail he would call the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. I found a way to contact Mike and me & Doug considered following the route he and three others had...

Tales of Strainers Past (not passed)

I suppose the strainer story that I remember most was about some friends of mine from Oregon paddling the John Day River (I think?). Robin, who is a paraplegic, was paddling bow in a duckie when they piled up against a strainer. She was trapped, but with head above water and in no real danger...

    Post Knee Replacement Rehab

Well, like I said before, we haven't nailed down the itinerary but I'm wrangling 8 weeks off for the trip. Which includes getting there and back from New England. I seem to recall it would be 3 weeks for the Idaa Trail alone. I'm glad I'm going with an experienced group of folks, since I've...

Unexpected benefit of Kevlar over carbon fiber

Conducts electricity? I wonder if you can rub the canoe on your shirt and stick it the wall like a balloon. Sure would be a great storage option.

    Post Knee Replacement Rehab

From Yellowknife 6 of us go north, up river, following what is known as the Idaa Trail, which go over the height of land into the Camsell River down to Great Bear Lake. 41 named portages. Then we go west, and take the Bear (Great Bear?) River down to the Mackenzie at Fort Norman. If we get...

    Post Knee Replacement Rehab

So I had my knee joint replaced and went through the namby pamby physical therapy that they prescribe. Two and a half months later I'm done with that and can walk around just fine. Can I toss a royalex boat on my shoulders and scamper a couple miles through the woods? No. So it's time for...

    Favorite no-shuttle-needed canoe camping places?

Yeah the article is down. But it'll be back soon! Mike, to avoid any portaging, you can put in on Johnson Pond in the North Maine Woods, paddle downstream to Allagash Lake and do a circuit of that lake (motors prohibited). Also if you want, you can stay at Loon Lodge in the same neck of the...

    mini cell

I used to search minicell on Ebay and get a bunch of hits offering a pile of random pieces for next to nothing. Now all I can get is NRS prefab kayak butt-pads. Anyone have the secret code to get just bulk minicell offers?

    Crow's Foot Poling Tip

Friggin MINT, right? Now I know 2 people who have one of these. You and me. Sorry the link doesn't work, I'm working on rebuilding my entire website. As far as the source of the image, it was some online archive having to do with either Seminole or Mikosukee (SP?) tribes of the Florida...

    Zipper Pet Peeve

I was thrilled to find out my REI tent has a self healing zipper. I snagged it pulling my gear out through a small opening to keep the skeeters out. Zipped it all the way to one end, evened the two sides, zipped it back, and all better.
