    Wildfire Smoke

Mem's take makes sense to me. I know I saw tons of tree tops & wood laying everywhere in the cuts that I drove through up there. I had to wonder if it wouldn't be more efficient to chip the trees onsite & reduce waste but, I suppose, if that worked, it would already be done. Luckily, there is...

    inReach Explorer Plus issue

I don't have the Plus (just an Explorer) but like Mem, I've never deleted an old location. At the very top of the screen, there is a (green, in my case) tab that says "new location" so I've never had to delete an old one to get a new forecast. If you open an expired forecast, it gives...

Cedar strip canoe build epoxy issues

I agree that, from what we can see, it looks like the cloth has pulled away from air bubbles forming (or, possibly, stretching the glass it while wet?). I've had small areas do that (seems particularly prevalent when glassing the inside) and I've have had success injecting epoxy under the...

    Two rescues in one day

You can safely pick up snappers by the tail (admittedly, it IS safer to use sticks, shovels & buckets). Unlike other turtles, their mouths can reach every other part of their bodies

    Final curing of epoxy boats

I'm not terribly familiar with the properties of sunlight. Would leaning over the hull & taking a reading of the shaded area be sufficient to get an accurate temperature? Anyone in the South care to do some testing? You should definitely get some hotter surface temps and, honestly, the way...

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

I broke out their response in this thread. If you'd care to check with West Systems (which I figure is the other major player in the world of strippers), please post their response in the new thread. Thanks in advance.

    Final curing of epoxy boats

In response to a conversation started on this thread, I had an interesting conversation with an epoxy manufacturer today. I'll break it out here so as to not derail the original thread and to make it more searchable in the future (probably worth researching IMO): In the above referenced...

Hudson's Bay Company shuts down after 355 years

I really need to hit a Canadian Tire next trip North. I've been to Timmy's & discovered the awesome fritters of Voyageur's General Store... seems like I should get the full experience.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

OK, wait... Sorry Glenn but, at the risk of (further?) derailing this thread... 140° F is straight "hot" from the water heater. Now, I paddle strippers & wouldn't hesitate to hose them down with hot tap water (if I ever washed them) but could that temperature damage some hull materials? I...

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

Preach on. I'm not a lake jumper as my time on the water is severely limited (so boats are dry before launching again) but I can't think anyone would want to spread invasives. I suppose that we could research protocols but it might be easier to just have them repeatedly hammered into our thick...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

That's actually one of the reasons that I started building strippers. My re-entry to canoe tripping was with an 80s-era Sawyer and I hated beating up a vintage boat that was no longer made. Now that I build my own, I can mistreat them with impunity... "I built it so it's nothing special and...

    Cheap stove alternative.

I think I'd worry a lot more about "UL approved" in my kitchen toaster or crock pot (something that stays plugged in when I'm away from home) than a camp stove (which I'm likely to be crouched over as I eagerly await supper). I usually carry 2 stoves, a pocket rocket and an Amazon cheapie...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Stick around, we'll have you dragging boats across portage trails & bashing into rocks in no time. Seriously, there's nothing wrong with keeping things in nice shape but, yes, scratches and repairs are all part of the games that we play. The extent to which we repair those scratches varies...

Converting Penobscot 16 into a solo...

I'd clamp something (like a wooden furring strip?) to the hull at your desired locations and see how it behaves. If the flex / support seems reasonable, drill some holes and add the thwart(s). I'm sure there is an art (and, probably a science) to thwart placement but I'm a "trial & error" guy...

Converting Penobscot 16 into a solo...

Because the seats are hung from the gunwales, I doubt that they lend much structural support to the hull. As Benson points out, removing them to test (and reinstalling if needed) is easy enough... Go for it!

    First build, sanding issues...

Sure looks better than my first... Very nice! I'm in the "don't sweat the sanding scratches" camp because you'll scratch the heck out of it when using it and I guarantee everybody will rave about how nice it looks and no one will mention the scratches (even the real ones that you put in from...

Two days on the N. Branch, Potomac

As one of those who's been able to do a couple of those weeks-long trips as well as many local day paddles, I'm glad that you took the time to share the TR. I find the trade-off between solitude and ease of logistics to be acceptable and local stuff shouldn't be overlooked. The Potomac is on...

I too was a bit worried about weather / water levels leading up to your trip. I'm really glad that it worked out for you guys and thanks for the TR; I really enjoyed reading it.
