Raising seat height in my new Esqiif Echo?

Thread drift alert: I think everybody says "gunn-ells" despite the spelling. Is there anyplace that they say "gun-WHALES"?

    Wasioto Whitehall Build

Get the experience with this hull & re-evaluate afterward. It really doesn't take much change in hull shape to become "unique" although some minor tweaks may change handling characteristics significantly (for better or worse).

    First Paddle in NW Solo

Personally, I can't stand staring at ropes for hours on end so I tie around the hull at the first roof rack station and call it good. Very cool that the pup likes it and even better that you seem to.

    Trip Recommendations in Northern Sask

I'd think that it's absolutely OK to revive any old thread that seems relevant to your current inquiry or ability to provide updated information. (although, for the TR, please crop out the 'Yak ;)) IME, for Pike, Walleye and solitude, you can't go wrong in NW Ontario. @memaquay has provided...

and if not... I guess it makes the TR more interesting.

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

No. Use a single blade... like a man. (sorry, I couldn't resist. OK... I suppose that I could, but what fun is THAT?)

    Bears and Meals

I think the safe bet is to assume that the bear can smell it and will eat whatever is available. I guess barrels or vaults are required now in the BWCA but I'd still hang. (Better safe than hungry)

    Old Alabama paddler says hello.

Welcome. I'll look forward to seeing where you wind up. I've been focused North due to limited vacation time but retirement isn't too far away (I hope) and I'll spend winters to the South at that point.

"Rina Sen: Mastering the Rapids, Shaping the Future of Indian Canoe Slalom"

Welcome. Others would know better than I but I can't remember another CT member from your neck of the woods. Congrats on a highly successful career so far and I hope you find continued success. I also hope you stick around as your geographic area is unique as is the perspective of an...

    A Raven from Scratch

Stopped by the shop after horses and took a few pics. I add this for anyone considering wood gunwales but finds fitting them intimidating: I use 2 piece gunwales because the thought of getting the compound angle correct in the first try would scare the bejesus outta me. For 16 foot(ish)...

    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

I kneel in rapids or sketchy open water crossings (it facilitates prayer) but I don't (and can't) put the top of my foot flat against the hull. I'm kneeling with toes down & bent slightly. In that position, I do not need to sit back against anything other than my lower legs so ejection should...

    A Raven from Scratch

It's a bit nerve-wracking for me too but I keep cutting until it turns out OK. I'll try to get a couple of close-up pictures of "oops" areas that I had to play with. (horses after work tonight so it'll probably be Thursday before I get back to the shop) I usually tell people that you don't...

Reminder re November 2026 Fund Drive

Hi Pikachu! it's been a minute since we've had a spammer hack his way in. @Glenn MacGrady 's on vacation til Thurs but he'll probably blast you back to the nethersphere at that time (If @Alan Gage doesn't get you 1st). In the meantime, I guess you could make your case for retention. Glenn...

    Saving Another RX Penobscot 16

That's what I use to lift them between the trusses of the carport. 1 per canoe seems fine so I'd say that you've got room for expanding the fleet. Mohawk solves the paddle problem for now but I'd recommend DIYing a wooden paddle (or 2) this winter. (nothin' like "I made it" IMO)

    Removing duct tape residue

I'd try acetone. If for no other reason than it dries residue free. If you don't want anything that harsh / flammable, I've heard that Goo-be-gone works also.

    A Raven from Scratch

Time to wrap this up (I've done a little better at working on it than I've done at reporting progress) I don't recall if I waited a couple of days or not (I think I got distracted so it's likely) but I got 3 coats of spar varnish in the inside and then tackled the seat installation. I wanted...

    Canoe Weight Calculator

@sophiamark, welcome to the forum. One alternative to canvas would be dacron (ceconite). Weigh savings are reportedly substantial. https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/video-tom-mackenzie-builds-rib-plank-ceconite-canoe.128845/

    Getting in and Getting out

Welcome. I tend to use a hybrid of some of the above and, as mentioned, you should experiment to see what works best for you. I certainly agree that motion helps stabilize the hull when launching but I wouldn't use a paddle across the gunwales because it can slide pretty easily. I enter...

    Gunwale options in California

Welcome. Looks like a great boat for the money. Are you looking for plastic / aluminum replacements or would you consider installing wood gunwales? (Not a bad DIY project IMO and that would look sharp with Cherry)
