A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

I never measured my 2021, just took the specs for granted but my boat somehow found its way back to Dave last year, and was advertised at 27.5 inches.

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

Interesting, since the specs for the two hulls are so close. Yet the spec sheet lists the Vagabond's capacity at 350 pounds and the Kestrel's at 300. CEW leaves a lot of nuggets floating about on the internet:

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

Regrettably, the only time I have spent in the Wildfire was at the WPSCA several years ago. It was a windy day on the pond and my impression was that the Wildfire was quite a handful in a stiff breeze, the downside to the extra depth. When the wind subsided, I found the Wildfire as fun and...

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

Not so much a need, really, but sometimes I have the opportunity to compare similar canoes over a longer period of time, just for the fun of it. I had a Merlin II and a Kestrel for a time as well. The Kestrel, farthest from DY's involvement in design, suited my tastes the least being a...

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

First, Fourth and Fifth of DY's small class trippers, per CEW's analysis. The more contemporary hulls may be lighter and prettier, but the Vagabond is still my favorite.

Esquif Adirondack vs Old Town Pack-Worth the upgrade?

I would go with the Echo, the ADK is just a Pack clone, so expect the same performance. You don't say where you are, but if you are not far from Rochester NY, Oak Orchard Canoe has an Echo Demo for sale at $1499, same price as a new Adirondack. Lots of used Royalex solos at that price point...

Deep scratch on my swift kevlar

Talk about timing, I thumped a stump in this morning's paddle at a pretty good clip and my first thought was: Thank God I'm in my Curtis and not the Keewaydin!

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

All the specs are available on Charlie Wilson's Canoe Compare doc shared somewhere in this Forum. If I recall, the Merlin was not very popular.

Foam block pad for one-shoulder carries

I had been carrying my Keewaydin 14 on my shoulder from the launch as well, BUT after seeing the other post about the Swift side pod seat mount popping off the hull, I thought better of it. It always made a strange creaking sound when I lifted the boat up from the one side, and in my head I'm...

Deep scratch on my swift kevlar

A few years ago I purchased an automotive headlight lens restoration kit which came with several small sheets of emery from 2400 to 10000 grit. I can't tell you how many scuffs and scratches I've made disappear with that kit. For deeper scratches on Swifts, I use clear gelcoat from Evercoat...

    Old Town Pack?

Yes, Old Town Packs came with the white trim up until about 1983. $100 is a gift, surprised it's not sold already.

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

Oh, folks get the ID wrong all the time. But in this case they would have deliberately had the Merlin decal placed on the stern, so I'm thinking maybe it's legit. If it were here in the NE, I'd be inclined to pick it up and we'd know for sure.

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

You might be right about the Merlin Emblem, looks off compared to the catalogue. I had a Merlin II as well, but I can't see why anyone would try to pass a Merlin II off as its predecessor.

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

That is a beauty! Glad it's on your side of the continent; I really don't have the room.

    Noel Canoe Dave Curtis Consignment

Hey! That's my old Bluegill, sold her back in 2018. So, are you a business entity now, collecting sales tax and such?

    New Graphics at Hemlock Canoe?

Perhaps when he gets enough feedback he will rethink the change. I always thought the Hemlock logo was one of the classiest.

    New Graphics at Hemlock Canoe?

Kinda like the old Curtis logo placement amidships, and the old Canoe Country emblem on the bow.
