    Paddling in an Apocalypse

A local's knowledge of the land and family/neighbor relationships matter and the folks I know in rural areas aren't hurting in the ammo department. A Rambo wannabe from the burbs isn't going to fare well.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

I get a kick out of the suburban peppers who are going to grab their bug out bags, hop in their "overlanding" rigs, and head into the hills. It may be different out west where there are vast expanses of public land, but east of the Rockies those hills and woods are owned by locals who've lived...

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

...so now you're in the Canadian wilderness., the week or two of supplies you fit in your canoe has run out and winter is approaching - what now? Or is this one of those apocalypses that only lasts a couple weeks?

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

I also wanted to address your concern about paddling a lot less than you thought. That's been the case for me. I'm carrying a bicycle in the back of my towed car and having the canoe on top makes it a little more of a pain to get it in and out of the back hatch. I've used the bike much more...

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

I agree with @SouthernKevlar - bring your most versatile canoe. I'm about a month and a half into a trip from the Midwest through Colorado then dropping south, crossing to southern California and north up the coast. I'm currently in Oregon and will cross into Idaho in the morning. No real...

The "Canoeing Capital Of The Ozarks"

I've never been to Noel, but a group of us go to the Ozarks for a week of paddling every September. Sometimes northern Arkansas and sometimes southern Missouri. Last year was the Buffalo and this year we're going to Eminence to paddle Jacks Fork, the Current River, and the Eleven Points River...

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

Anything between 6-7' works for me. I prefer lighter rods since I mostly catch smallmouth and rock bass. I usually use an ultralight rod with 4lb line or 6 lb line with a light rod with fast action. I don't go heavier on the line so I can cast lighter lures.

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

I've used base clamps and bars from Inno on several cars. I bought the cheapest square bars because that's how I roll. They worked fine with high winds and high speeds. Inno Racks Fitment

The victims were being responsible - they hired a guide.

    Throwback Thursday Photos

My father and I racing, probably in the Madhatters race but I don't know if it's the same year as the above picture was taken. I think the Madhatters are still holding the race but I doubt they still attach a manilla tag to people's necks for timekeeping.

    Gators and kids

We've been wintering in Florida for the past few years and those are my first experiences with gators. We quickly learned that they want nothing to do with us. It's still disconcerting when one is swimming towards your boat and they slowly submerge while still heading towards you. It takes...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

A friend of my parent's that we used to camp/paddle with when I was young. He'd let us kids drive that buggy in the hills and it's amazing it held together the way we abused it.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

It I don't think transport has much to do with it. Nearly all rec kayaks are rotomolded HDPE and are over 50 lbs (most closer to 60) so they're no easier to get on a vehicle roof than a canoe. They are easier to store since they're generally shorter and can be stood on their nose against a...

    Spring Whitewater Paddling has Begun

On the way home from Seneca, SC on Sunday we were on I40 along the Pigeon River in NC. I knew Helene was a disaster, but it's amazing how much of I40 was swept away. And the Pigeon is at the bottom of a deep canyon well below the road.

Paddles: Shaft Length? Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Grip?

I'm not sure what switching sides has to do with symmetric vs asymmetric grips, at least it doesn't matter for me. Are some people rotating the paddle 180 when they switch sides? I've never done that. For me the very minor annoyance is that I have a 50/50 chance of picking it up wrong when...

Paddles: Shaft Length? Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Grip?

I prefer a symmetrical grip but it's not a deal breaker. I have a cheap Bending Branches Loon that I've used and abused on shallow rocky rivers for the past few seasons and it has an asymmetric grip. It's not a big deal. But if I had the choice between two otherwise identical paddles I'd pick...

Pelican seeks protection under Canadian bankruptcy law as it restructures

I don't have an opinion of Pelican itself, but Wilderness Systems and Dagger are good brands. I know kayaks are verboten here but I own two Wilderness Systems rec kayaks and a Dagger whitewater kayak and they are tops in their niche. I hate to see any outdoor supplier struggle.
