I have used MRE's in the past when I was given some by active duty relatives who have since retired from the military. As I recall they contained a lot of calories per pouch and I really liked the miniature bottles of Tabasco sauce that were often included.

I still have a pack frame with the pack from the early 1970’s when I first started backpacking. I don’t know that I ever will but it seems that I could probably fabricate the cradles for the top of the frame. Certainly would be a lot cheaper as opposed to the prices being asked for these items.

We used a 30 meter tape and were strictly supervised and expected to ensure the tape was laid flat on the tread so we got an exact measurement. Wabakimi Project standards on portages started to decline once Uncle Phil became too feeble to walk back and check our work.
