Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

When I started I always cooked on a Coleman two-burner with a stand. Up off the ground just like cooking at home, and the pots and pans stay pristine - none of that black soot on everything. That's not the way my current crew does it - everything is on the fire. I am becoming a convert. Takes a...

Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

The guy doing the cooking is a competition BBQ cook and judge. He know's how to cook over a fire. This was dinner the night before - campfire paella. Not in a Bid Daddy pan, but about the same size. Life is good when you travel with him...

Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

This is the 20". It is nice to cook everything in one pan. You can set up different heat zones depending on where you position the pan on the fire. It would be nice to have the lid - on this trip the eggs would have set up faster. I didn't realize that Lisa DeHart did a video on it.

Anyone else cook with a Big Daddy skillet?

A friend has been bringing one on trips, and I am becoming a convert. Doesn't take up to much room, will cook a ton of food, and is easy to clean. Here was breakfast yesterday - a dozen eggs, home fries and bacon. I'm not big on runny eggs, so I had him flip mine - tasted great. This was...

Summer swims are kind of nice

Summer swims are kind of nice

I had my third swim of the year yesterday at the Bradford Fish Weirs on the Pawcatuck River in RI. At least around here, fish weirs have become a popular alternative to dam removal at sites where there is a desire to keep the wetland behind the dam, or where the cost of removing pollution from...

Can't do this in a tripping boat

I'll be honest - I haven't tried in years - this was the result of my last attempt - lasted about 10 seconds and over I went... There are plenty other places to surf on that run that are less likely to put me on the water. ;)

Can't do this in a tripping boat

He is kneeling on a pedestal - probably about 6" tall. He was pretty amazing to watch.

Can't do this in a tripping boat

One of the local AMC chapters does Thursday night runs on the Tville section of the Farmington River. I finally made it to a run last night. Tville is a short run with lots of play spots, but the best known in the main play hole. I've seen plenty of kayakers play boating in that hole, but this...

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Mine is a regular Outrage, not an XL. I am 240 lbs, and back in the day people would have said that I am too big for an Outrage. Now people bigger than me are paddling 8' boats. I do have to be really careful to lean going into turns or the boat will come out from under me. Not sure if that is...

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Could be that the current generation in interested in running continuous stuff where a pump is helpful, if not essential. There are times when I wish I had a pump, but I don't run a lot of continuous stuff where I can't get to shore or where a swim would be dangerous.

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Nope - I don't have a pump. I've thought about it, but never pulled the trigger. For most of the stuff that I do it is easy to get to shore to empty the boat. Also a nice excuse to get out and stretch. For that run I don't need one - I got to the bottom dry (very unlike me). Not like the second...

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Don’t know how many of you folks are in the northeast, but if you are you have probably been to a dam release on the Deerfield River. You can do the big stuff on the Dryway, or easier stuff below the Fife Brook Dam. We went Saturday and did the run from the Fife Brook Dam down to the Shunpike...

    whitewater chain of command

Hadn't really thought about the stern initiating the carving arc untill I watched this: Still think bow leads and stern follows. With a good bow paddler the stern can tell which way they need to go and initiate the carve.

Back with the kayakers - Pemi in Woodstock

I was back with the kayakers yesterday for a run on the Pemi in Woodstock, NH. The Pemigewasset arises in the White Mountains near Franconia Notch and flows south for 65-miles to Franklin where it joins the Winnipesaukee River to form the Merrimack River. There are several sections of the Pemi...

    Bell Wildfire RX (Yellowstone) Restomod

My Outrage (outfitted by Millbrook) has a thin piece of composite material as a deck plate. The back is screwed down to the handle, which wouldn't work on your boat. p.s. - I have beat up the leading edge a little. ;)

    Bell Wildfire RX (Yellowstone) Restomod

Wow - it looks great - nice work. I kneel feet flat, toes pointed back. People think that the pressure point on your body when kneeling is the knees. I agree that it is actually the ankles that get uncomfortable first. I've tried pads under my feet and pool noodles under my ankles and it didn't...

    Bell Wildfire RX (Yellowstone) Restomod

Here is the 2"/1" seat drop on my Yellowstone Solo with vinyl gunwales. Seat ends up being 9.5" in the front and 10.5" in the back. Here is the same view in my Wildfire with wood gunwales. Seat ends up being 9" in the front and 10" in the back. It is hard to make comparison measurements...

Paddling and Poling on the White River in VT

I assume it was an Explorer. I looked at the boat and had the same question, but I never asked him.
