Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

I'm not the tarp-master. There are others in my usual group that are better at setting them up than me. This was our year-end overnight back in December. We actually did get some rain on this trip. I have to say that I have been pretty lucky over the years - haven't needed the tarp a lot.

My old Forester had the same problem - quart of oil every 1000-miles. Not sure what the issue was, but even the dealer told me that it wasn't worth trying to fix. I did buy another Forester. No problem with this one, or any of the other Subarus we have owned.

One canoe to rule them all?

I'm with you. For me it would be a 14' river runner like the composite Wildfire or royalex Yellowstone Solo or Mohawk Odyssey. About the only thing those boats can't do is carry two people, and I have plenty of friends who paddle tandem boats. ;) My current fleet is 8 boats. I have spent about...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

My father had an XL-14 outfitted as a solo - he liked it. Tandem paddled with a friend in his Caption a few years ago on the West River in VT. That was fun.

Forester for me. Sometimes you need to bring the kayakers along - for a ride back to the car...

    Ice conditions in Northeast

Southern New England is going to get rain - 1-3 inches. Every river in sounthern New Engalnd will be running on Sunday. It's Palm Sunday, but hopefully I'll be able to get out. This storm is the best of both worlds if you live around here. Rain to bring the rivers up this weekend, Snow to...

    Old Town Penobscot 17

Never paddled one, don't know anyone that owns one, but here is my favorite picture of a Penobscot 17. This was the Hill & Dale Rapid on the Westfield River during the Wildwater Race in 2010. We did an early run and then stopped to watch the race carnage on the way home. Looks like a capable...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Good luck - I think you are going to love it. Millbrook is just over the border in NH, so there is a big following around here with whitewater boaters and slalom racers. I have actually been on trips where there are more Millbrooks than kayaks. Those are good trips.

    Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Canoe Hulls

Not sure I can actually tell the difference. My Outrage is a fish-form design with the “widest section forward of the centerline producing a buoyant bow that is ideal for paddling upstream and rising over large waves”. I am pretty lousy at quartering and blocking waves, but the Outrage does seem...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

What is possible in a really old school canoe, but only if you wear a CCM hockey helmet and have a tire tube for floatation. You've probably seen it, but I love that video - especially the guy that paddles around the corner at around 47:55. I don't get up to VT very often - unless you count...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Buy it. If it is 5-hours this way I might try to beat you to it. I'd love to have a composite Outrage. If I ever buy a new boat that will be it - I should probably do it now before Kaz retires. I am 240 lbs and have no problem in the royalex version. Back in the day people would have said I...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

I don't see it so much around here. Then again, I am in the Ocean State where sea kayaks rule. ;) Most people who buy open boats around here are outfitting them as pack boats and paddling with a double blade. I guess that counts. Nice pictures, and it great to see your daughter out paddling...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My go-to solo is a Bell Yellowstone Solo. I bought it new in 2005 for $800. I have paddled it everywhere - rivers, lakes, even the ocean. I can put a week’s worth of gear for tripping, and can put bags and straps to run easy whitewater. If I could only have one boat, this would be it. I also...

    Paddling in the Pool

It is cooling off here as well. It was 60 degrees and sunny last week. Will be down to to the 30's and 40's this week - we may even get some snow on Friday. Still not bad, but those warm temperatures get you thinking about spring.

    Paddling in the Pool

Not a swimming pool. The pool behind the Birch Hill Dam on the Millers River in MA. I don’t usually paddle during the week, but I knew that I couldn’t paddle this past weekend due to family obligations. When I saw a trip posted for Thursday on a flatwater section of the Millers River, I...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

Cliff Jacobson just did a post on kayak vs canoe - more from a tripping perspective. https://www.cliffcanoe.com/post/kayak-or-canoe-which-is-best-for-you For river tripping a canoe is definitely the boat for me, but I would also like to get out on the Maine Island Trail, and for that a sea...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

There are a few big races around here, but not that big. Westfield Wildwater Race always has a lot of canoes. Apparently they are having some issues with the town this year, and it might get cancelled. That would be a bummer. Another one is the Scantic Spring Splash - two class II+/III...

Where have all the whitewater canoes gone?

I got my fist taste of whitewater paddling back in the early 1990's. As Glen said, my father was an active AMC member and once a year we would do a weekend trip on the Androscoggin - 13-Mile Woods one day, Rapids below the Pontook Dam the next. I have a picture of us running the Errol Rips...

    whitewater chain of command

Bow leads, stern follows. Having said that, the stern paddler can always overrule what the bow is doing since they are in the eddy-resistance end of the boat. When you have a knowledgable padder in the bow, you need to resist the urge to do that or you will end up woking against each other (and...
