Even though it was literally hard to see him in the veritable monsoon he was test paddling in, Steve demonstrated what I call good "stomach crunch" power technique with the shorter bent shaft. That is, where the forward stroke power is imparted not so much with an upper arm push, or a lower arm...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

Patrick Moore, who knew Mike Galt personally and professionally probably as well as anyone in the 1970s and early 80s, wrote a long obituary-bio-tribute article about Mike Galt's life after he died, at least part of which was published in Paddler magazine. Patrick's full bio used to be available...

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

@lu22, congrats on your purchase. Glad you like the canoe. $1,000 sounds familiar. What year is the canoe? It will be very helpful to you, and more generally to searchers and researchers in the future, to post your problem area pictures, your advice-seeking questions, and ultimately your...

    20' Grand Laker. Free

@markchabak or @Robin, did anything happen with this offered canoe?

It was pointed out to me by DM that I had labeled my photo so as to give away the answer to two of the five quiz questions. So I changed the label. I have no comment on Alan's answers because he is disqualified from the quiz by virtue of his "super" powers. I will say that the guy with the...

This is the first photo QUIZ in this 108 page thread. Identify the two people in the photo below (taken today) both of whom are members here, identify the two boats that can be seen, and guess what's going on in the photo.

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Hope you have a wonderful time, recped, and I'm sure many of us will look forward to tracking your progress.

Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

That is an interesting slice of data, but I'm skeptical that wood canoes are representative worldwide of what I'll call the recreational canoe market. The study @Erica linked has data on recent year sales in different countries, but I believe those data are blocked out unless you buy the study...

Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

Sam, you've been a member for a while, but let me just say welcome for your first post! Feel free to ask any questions and to post messages, photos and videos, and to start threads, in our many forums. Please read Welcome to CanoeTripping and Site Rules! Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

Erica, can you post a link to the article. That is a good point and could result in different answers. I'm not sure how many natives of the USA and Canada use canoes for their daily livelihood as in Asian and South American countries. Although, I seem to recall @Woodpuppy in Tallahassee...

    Strip Glue Review

Jim, if the prices were equal, you would use Elmer's Max instead of Gorilla Wood for your strips?

Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

I don't know the answer. Just asking for opinions if not facts. I can't remember everyone, but we have members here at least from Germany, Switzerland, Norway, England, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, and even China. Perhaps they have a perspective.

Tour owner jailed for 10.5 years for weir drowning deaths of 4 customers

Odyssey, I think we can all agree that low head dams (weirs), particularly very vertical ones, are an important safety issue of life-threatening potential. Therefore, we should be very careful about what we say about them on the world's highest rated canoe forum. I have done research, but have...

    Help with paddle ID?

My pictured Camp paddle just happens to be decorating my bedroom, which is probably why I haven't used it in years. It's 48" long and weighs 16 ounces. I hope to go paddling locally tomorrow and I'm definitely going to use it.

No need to be sorry. I was just engaging in some private 8th grade humor. Besides, French words are not the native language of either of us. Actually, I know almost nothing about Grey Owl's history or messaging other than that he was a nature lover and conservationist. I'll defer to @Odyssey's...

Ah . . . . so, anyway, you are a chic oiler. ( would be off topic.) By the way, do we all know that the original Grey Owl was a phony, a fake Indian, a "pretendian."

Canoe odyssey just begun from NW-most to SE-most points in USA

So Verlen Kruger, who paddled more miles than anyone in recorded history, was not a canoeist. Okay. Wit aside, that's an ambiguous term. What one word would you use to describe Verlen Kruger's watercraft, variously manufactured by Sawyer (Loon), Mad River (Monarch) and then Kruger himself (Sea...
