    Reasonably Priced Bent Shaft Paddles?

I have both Carlisle and Mohawk straight paddles from my early canoeing days and, while I don't care for metal and plastic paddles in general, I preferred my Mohawks over Carlisles simply because they are lighter weight and less clunky.

    Thigh Straps for Seated Canoeing?

You're not being contrarian, but are simply reflecting the experience and preference of many folks, especially Canadians, who grew up using tandem canoes for all sorts of paddling in abundant waters, including solo, rather than in specialized canoes for different types of solo paddling. I feel...

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

Thanks for the reminder, Marc. I'm planning on being at the WCHA Assembly and sneaking over to Church Pond to visit the freestylers, too. Hope to see you there. Do you still live in NY or now in Florida?

    Thigh Straps for Seated Canoeing?

To clarify, @ABT is asking whether anyone has experience or thoughts about using the inflatable kayak-type of thigh straps while seated in an open canoe to enhance stability and control. All serious whitewater paddlers in dedicated whitewater canoes (and kayaks) use thigh straps or thigh blocks...

Day Trip Report: Patterson Great Swamp (NY) at High Water

On May 11, 2025, after a week of heavy rain, which filled up the Patterson Great Swamp basin, legends tell the earnest story of "The Old Man and the Kee." Nestled in the Harlem Valley and covering over 6,000 acres in New York’s eastern Putnam and Dutchess Counties is one of the largest...

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

The spider quiz linked in the OP was rather medically technical. I did poorly. Aside from that, spiders have been a fairly significant phobia of mine around water. That's because when I was a young boy spending all my summers on a lake in Maine, we always had these big, ugly dock spiders under...

What polar bears think of kayaks

True. And to stop the unbearable behavior, I wouldn't blame the bear if he used it.

Kaleidoscopic Kringelfieber 2022 (Germany) from overhead drone

The U.S. freestyle movement, which also incorporates "Canadian style" solo paddling in tandem canoes, has been very influential in stimulating open canoe interest in Germany. This is the annual Kringelfieber freestyle gathering in 2022. The video has interesting overhead drone shots of the canoe...

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

In almost the same location, Tiger Creek (canal) and Lake Kissimmee, a woman kayaker was bitten on the arm by a gator in March: https://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/local/2025/03/04/alligator-bites-kayaker-on-lake-wales-tiger-creek-canal/81336827007/ April begins the breeding season for...

    UK paddler

Welcome, again, samb! It's so interesting to have canoeists from outside North America chipping in. Are you a WCHA member or do you know the UK's Nick Dennis, who is on the WCHA board with me? Also, did you make any of those paddles hanging on the wall?

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Wow, Al, that's unique! Upon first glance I thought it was some sort of barometric, medical isolation, or even a prison chamber. Very clever. It will beat setting up a tent in the dark, in the rain, or when you're just tired. There's quite a rear overhang with the canoe, but I suppose it would...

Side flotation: How it helps emptying water and assisting re-entry

The Boston Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) was famous for decades for lashing two 6'x2" planks of ethafoam under the inwales on both insides of their whitewater open canoes. Maybe they still do. This was in addition to end flotation bags. The purpose of the side flotation is to...
