I do it pretty much the same way Mark does.

I run my cloth across the interior hull, I usually have 60 inch rolls, so a solo is usually 3 pieces. I'm not out to win any beauty awards with my canoes. I find this method to be quite a bit easier than a full sheet, if you develop bubbles or wrinkles, it is much easier to work them out.

The Save the Moose Campaign 2024 kicked off to a great start on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. It might be a bit of a stretch to call this a canoe trip, as it was our first time taking the big 20 foot freighter, with a mighty 2.5 horse engine on it. Then again, it might be a bigger stretch...

I think I'm still leaning toward some kind of mahogany due to the size of the stock. As I mentioned earlier, I have one piece that is 22 inches wide, 14 feet long, and not a knot in it. Might give it a whirl building a solo canoe if my contract is extended into the spring.

Stripped up some of the mystery wood. Not sure what it is again. Quite light, sort of open grained, and quite stiff. Don't think it's poplar now. Also fairly brown in colour. Some form of mahogany?

I really haven't thought that much about it, I just always lean the canoe to my paddle side, unless things get hairy.

There was a canoe racing circuit in the States and Northern Ontario in the 70's. One of the races occurred in a town 80k from me. The video below is from 1968, and if you are looking at how people get in and out of canoes quickly, there are some good examples.
