    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

The NC P15 and 16 are really underrated river canoes, IMO. I sure miss mine, but it got too heavy. If I ever get a shot at one in Blue Steel again, I'm all over that.

How much safety is too much safety?

I wear my helmet when I'm poling on pushy water with rocky bottoms (not gravel) and exposed rock. If the water is deep and wide with no need to get newr exposed rock, I generally don't. If I don't know, I bring the helmet and decide accordingly.

How much safety is too much safety?

I think a type 1 would be overkill, but there are times when I wear a helmet. Not just for falling out - which is a good reason - but also because sometimes a stuck pole can snap back and hit you in the head (which I've had happen).

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I have to agree with that. But isn't that true for most so-called Prospectors? The Clipper Prospector 14 has established a reputation of being a competent river tripper up to class 3. Clipper claims 1.5" of rocker, but of course it's hard to compare that on paper. What I do know is that some...

    The 'Easy Rider' Decked Boat

Apparently, since I didn't mention it yet in this thread, my exposure to the TSL1 came some time after May of 2016. A couple joined us for an overnight trip down a 25 mile stretch with plenty of class 2+, including a couple of 3/4 mile long rapids. Much of that was a bit technical, but they ran...

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

I had no idea there was a builder within a day's drive of me! I wish there was more info on the hull designs.

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I think I have to agree with all of this. I replaced the Guide with the Wildfire. While I haven't tested it yet, I have no doubt that I can go a week in most cases without overloading it. That probably wouldn't include my dog though. A Prospector 14 is going to have more capacity, so I'd...

    MRC Explorer, Fiberglass?

Mad River fiberglass hulls had the insides finished in the same color as the gelcoat skin. Kevlar hulls showed natural kevlar color except for the "football" which was painted grey $240 for an intact fg Explorer is a heck of a deal!

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I took my 14'6" MR Guide on the John Day river for a week. Can't drink the water there - way too much farm runoff. We had raft support, so he carried most of my water. Otherwise, not a problem. Had there been no significant rapids, I would have been fine with the extra weight.

    Whitewater preference?

To begin with, I'm not even interested in running those big drops like in that video, although I enjoy watching. Other than that, yeah it's situational. Depends on what boat I'm in and how familiar I am with it too. I've only done one multi-day trip with anything bigger than class 2+. On that...

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

Oh hey, @FartherWest - it just occurred to me that one of my paddling partners may be very interested in your Merlin II. I'll shoot him a heads-up if you let me know when and where you list it.

    A Roller Portage

Here's one I was hoping to get to use, but it didn't work out. Oliver Inlet Tramway on Admiralty Island.

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

I can maybe be a little more helpful, @FartherWest . Pricing is going to depend on how much of a hurry you're in to sell it and how close is someone who knows what it is. I'm about half a day's drive from you. If I hadn't already recently deleted my boat fund with the purchase of a Wildfire...

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I wear a class 5 MTI pfd when on rivers. It's labeled type 5 because it is outfitted as a rescue vest, but that isn't why I bought it. It was simply the best fitting (for me) high flotation vest I found locally. I don't see it listed on the label here, but IIRC, it was tagged as 23 lb...

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

@FartherWest - when reading my post above, keep in mind that Bend is more "canoe friendly" than Southern Idaho. But at the same time, as @M Clemens mentions, solo canoes are still uncommon there. (I know - I've watched pretty closely).

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

The OP confuses me because Nova Craft doesn't list anything I'd call a WW playboat or day tripper. Other than that exception, it does seem like the idea is playboats. I can't think of any current makers other than those already listed.
