    First canoe build

Funny ! Just today I was setting up a router, to bead and cove ! Your set up looks good. Sometimes you can't avoid tear out, If you take a quick look at the grain of the strip, before running it through the router, you can avoid that. Yes that strip is usable.

    Basalt/Innegra, Building Experience?

I like the looks of the Swift better than mine! Mine is a straight cut, with the transom, at a forward angle. I'll post some pics soon, on another thread. Thanks for the input on Innegra ! Yes, I've only seen a few posts, on it. I'm curious if the vinyester, would wet out any better...

    A Raven from Scratch

That was how I made the patterns for the flotation chambers, on my first few. It worked. I glassed both sides Haven't had an issue in over 30 years. Jim

    Basalt/Innegra, Building Experience?

It's a Bob tailed, Bruce Kunz 38 Spl. Bob tailing the 38, so I can get by with a few shorter strips. It won't change the water line, but it could accomodate a rudder. Have the forms up, working on the strips now. Jim

    Basalt/Innegra, Building Experience?

I'ts been quite some time, since there has been any scuttle on Basalt innegra. I'm in the process of another stripper build, and entertaining the idea of pulling a composite copy from it. I have a bunch of Kevlar cloth, and would like some input on the combination. Thanks ! Jim

    "Ecopoxy" Resin

People who kept track used to say 1 1/2gal. of Epoxy resin, for a typical solo canoe. I'm sure I go over that, with an extra layer up to about the 3" water line, plus flotation chambers. Both I don't build without. Jim

    New Ash Gunwales

What ever finish, you choose ? Here is a trick, I came up with, to prevent finish, from running down the hull. I know many will tape, and that is OK ! I built these simple stands, that easily store when not in use

The world’s first female whitewater open canoe designer

I'll make a stab at the reason for the square stern. It would increase the maneuverability of the hull, making quick turns easier, especially for the smaller paddler. I'd also guess there would only be a small amount of lost flotation. Jim

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

In my personal experience. Tumblehome is great for a Solo canoe. Not as beneficial in a tandem. Flare, adds buoyancy when heading into waves. It also makes a bouncy ride, and a loss of momentum. Shouldered tumble home is fine, but tougher to build in a stripper. Regular tumblehome, is...

    A Raven from Scratch

I normally set my seats, 5-6" aft of center. Unless you have a radical Symmetry, this works. Your seat looks like you can adjust trim, by moving your seating position. Most of the time, I paddle without gear. When I do paddle with gear, I adjust the location of the packs to correct trim. I...

    A Roller Portage

Sorry Boreal ! I was hesitant to give up the Identity, of Ojibway lake. As I explained to you, a friend had introduced it to me it. Out of respect to him, I kept it a secret. I guess that's the way I am. I'm also glad you found it ! Persistence pays off ! Ojibway Is a very easy lake to...

    A Raven from Scratch

Revived an old 96 Isuzu Hombre, last Summer. It's a Rust bucket, but after buying it for $100, sinking $1,000 into it ? It is now my Daily driver, at least for the Winter months. It had a blown head gasket, and with a Summers worth if love from me, It's has a new Rack for hauling canoes and...

    A Raven from Scratch

Looks great. I know for now it's a photo op. But a good idea, to keep the middle form strapped in place as much as you can, while sanding. If not, at least a spacer to keep the shearline from spreading. I helped a guy, who left the hull outside, on a Summer day, to sand the inside. His...

    Canoe seats

They look comfy ! They are bigger than mine. The arc up, on the short rails, looks good ! Will you varnish the webbing ? Jim

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I started Capping my shearline, years ago. I didn't like seeing the hull and fiberglass, exposed to the elements. It made me worry about rot and delamination. From then, I've always capped the shearline. So I glue and screw, the inwhale, and glue the outwhale. No screws are showing. No place...

    Canoe seats

Since I started making canoes, I was unimpressed by the small sizes of factory seats. On my second canoe, I made a comfortable seat. So I stuck with that same pattern to this day, with the exception of rise in the brace ( front to back) I'm looking at flat seat webbing on my next seat. The...
