Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

PVA will hold things together, put it should release, with some persuading. Next time for me ? I will add plastic, just on top of the football, and PVA on the side Looking good ! Jim Buckled one of my composites. Fixed it, but you can still see it. I built with more layers, gave the...

    more questions about peel ply

Peel ply works fine on a flat surface, or one that is a simple curve. Once you introduce a compound curve, such as a canoe hull ? You run into the problem that the Peel Ply won't conform. I'm talking hand lay ups here. I failed to get Peel Ply to work on one of my composites. I like the...

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

I was looking for this earlier. It illustrates the reasoning, to add an extra layer, or bias strips to the top of the main layer. I hope this clarifies what I posted.

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

After the epoxy has cured a day, come back with a scraper, and remove the strands, as well as feather the edges of the football. That's if you put the extra layer on top of main. If under main layer, you will have to live with it. Another reason to put the extra layer on top . Jim

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

I add bias strips on top of the main layer, when adding fill coats.. Prevents me from sanding into the main layer, and thinning it. As far as adding an extra layer, to the football ? I always add on top of the main layer, before adding fill coats. It blends in better. I have found it near...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Looks good ! So what is on top of the carbon ? Also, what did you use for a release, between the mold, and carbon? You will likely have that hull done, by the time our river is back to normal . We will need to paddle ! Jim

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

I'm really sold on the cedar inserts ! Will you vacuum bag the foam ? That would reduce the amount of resin needed for sure.

    Skid plate suggestions

100% Polyester Sweat Shirt fleece. use it like Kevlar felt. Sure it's not as durable as Kevlar felt ! But it can be sanded, and adds enough thickness to the stem, that it will give you plenty of wear resistance. Besides, you can get it in multiple colors !

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

I dealt with this, while glassing a composite. Instead of using a release agent ( Patal) I opted for Heat shrink window film. Adhesion to the plastic, was not a problem. Keeping plastic tight to the plug was. I wet out one side, with the hull tilting away. I let this side cure, about 6 hrs. I...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

I suspect, the Cotton wood doesn't bend quite like the WRC, that we usually use. So this isn't going to be a "Museum Piece " ? Dang. Seriously ! I get caught up in trying, and haven't yet, going for perfection. In reality, it is a canoe, that will take you places, only a fish can go...

    Strip canoe delamination

I reskinned a Polyester resin built canoe for a friend. I had a few spots, that had rot, after sanding. I filled those areas with, up to six layers of cloth. Reglassed with 6 oz E-glass, with an extra layer over the football, with 4 os S-glass. The hull was actually slightly lighter...

    Strip canoe delamination

The bond looks fine. Things happen ! Especially with that kind of mileage ! There is an old saying . " If you built it ? You know how to fix it !" A friend's canoe split, in the keel, from Oil canning. While ,in the BWCA. Duct tape got him home too. He was very proud of how light his canoe...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Recoating while the previous coat is still tacky, gives you a clearer and stronger bond. I learned this from a System 3 Tech, years ago. It's true. I had some blotching, on a hull years ago. That lead me to contact System 3. That was the response I received. A fill coat applied, while the...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Yes. I tried some MAS. It worked great. Maybe a little clearer, sanded fine, but seemed a little brittle in a test sample. I'd go for RAKA also. Jim

    Web Seat Comfort

Boy that seat looks pretty comfy to my ! I'd try a piece of Waffle foam. Like the Thermorest sleeping pads. Next a Nate stick. My youngest son came up with the idea. Place a thin flat, or slightly curved piece of wood under your legs, on top of the gunnels. I have one strapped to my inwhale...

    First canoe build

There are times a table saw shines, over the Skilsaw. 1.Short, narrow planks 2. gang cutting short narrow planks. 3. If you have and know how to set up a Power feeder. For a beginner with limited $, and space, and planks wider than 4", the Skilsaw is unequaled, in cost and accuracy of cut...

    Sasquatch sighting

Back in the 80's a local character, donned a Guerra suit, and made a few unannounced appearances. Here in small town Iowa, he created quite a stir. Local Sheriff told him to cut it out, he didn't want a Humicide to deal with ! It was funny after everyone found out the truth ! Big Foot would...
