Solid wood inserts for old webbed seat

Don’t they hold water/damp for a long time once rained on? I’m thinking multi-day trips when there’s not much chance to dry out.

Rescue on the Franklin River, Tasmania

This a from a whitewater raft journey, but the accident is one any of us could have anywhere. [And incidentally, this Franklin River is named for our very own John Franklin who died looking for the NorthWest Passage. He was for a time the governor of Tasmania.] While boulder-hopping, the...

    Camping with no tent, hammock

One of the most marvelous sensations was using no tent, no tarp, no bug protection. Just lie down in your sleeping bag any where you want and gaze at the brilliant stars until you fall asleep. Joshua Tree National Park.

    Two rescues in one day

Groan. In Florida all turtles are protected, except possibly the soft-shell.

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

The addition of the "wonder if this applies to canoes" is what made it funny to me.

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

Now I have a word for another passion of mine. And, apparently, a new source for used books.

    Two rescues in one day

That is distressing, what this man was doing. I’m glad you have put a stop to it.

Oopsie moments, or at least almost "oopsie"?

I had read that the Buffalo will rise rapidly with a hard rain. There were marks at high water which were, to me, unbelievably high. Not that I really didn't believe it, but that kind of rapid rise is difficult to comprehend. I did a few days on the Buffalo River a few years ago. It was very...

    What are you reading?

Deep Survival by Gonzalez is also a favorite of mine. Why and how people make clearly dangerous choices in a wilderness situation, even when they know better.

    What are you reading?

I just finished re-reading Lost in the Wild by Cary J. Griffith, which covers the exploits of two young men, in separate incidents, who get lost in the BWCA. I find the stories of their experiences and those of the people looking for them fascinating. I feel the suspense even though I know the...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I've found the canoe easier to carry than a pack of equivalent weight - unless I have the pack packed properly and all the straps and belts, etc. adjusted just right. In the past, when portaging, I could be sloppy at just grabbing the pack and get walking. Now I spend more time adjusting. Unless...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

For this summer, I was going to try to get it down to three portages for gear and one for the canoe. Even with a relatively short portage I could see that taking all day. Years ago I did a long portage in the Little Tupper Lake to Lila route - actually there are two long portages. It took me all...

    New Graphics at Hemlock Canoe?

I gotta say that from an aesthetic point of view, or from a commercial advertising pov, that's just awful.

    Photo of the day

Button bush was in full flower this morning on Apthorp Lake. A native plant found frequently lakeside. It is a super pollen/nectar plant and frequently is covered with butterflies. The second photo shows a spider hoping to nab a pollinator.

    Wildfire Smoke

That’s what it looked like in Stony Rapids when I was trying to fly into Cree Lake. It’s a bit apocalyptical.

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

What is spar varnish? Are there different types and if so, what type. It seems whenever I go to buy something, it turns out there’s several choices and I don’t know which one to choose.
