Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

I don't know about that. I remember my own mom throwing fast food trash out the window while traveling when I was a kid in the '60's. She quit doing that by the '70's. I have no doubt that the TV campaigns had an effect. And of course, they had an effect on us kids.

Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

Yeah, I think people who are in the habit of littering won't be changed. Neither will deliberately destructive people (although they might be discouraged from attending). But I have witnessed plenty of people who were oblivious of the damage they caused or might cause from their fire practices...

New Canoe Enthusiast Ready to Learn and Share!

And welcome. Since you mentioned the Willamette, I assume you would find the Soggy Sneakers paddler's guide to Oregon's rivers very useful.

On that note, Daisy, learn how to do a brace - the sooner the better. ;)

Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

The BWCA requires an orientation for entry permit (at least the permit holder of a group, as I understand it). That didn't make me feel "unfree" there. There are some very popular places that would benefit from a permit system with some basic unobtrusive training (reminder for many). I guess if...

"Momentum Matters": A Technique Essay by Marc Ornstein

I've learned a lot from reading and watching Ornstein. One thing I've noticed from his videos and others is that what we infer from text is not always exactly what we should do. For instance, the torso rotation that is stressed so much is actually slight - at least slighter than I used to...

    Racing in my tripping boat

Looks like a really fun stretch of river and a fun race. We have a famous rapid here called "Staircase" too. Doesn't look quite like that. I won't go near it. 🤪

    Hatchet or Saw?

No experience with it, but I like the looks of it.

    Wenonah Canak

The Easy Rider TSL1 is a tandem canoe though. And comparatively heavy. But I am a fan of that boat too. I'd also say it's more suitable for rough water.

    Wenonah Canak

I've seen in person a grand total of one Canak. Paddled alongside it for a bit, my wife and I in the Malecite. Very impressive. I have since always been watching for a used one because it would be ideal for windy days on the local lakes. I would be using a single blade, of course. ;)...

spray cover without snaps or velcro

And those parts have a habit of coming loose after less than a couple years. At least, that's what I see in my area. What is this reluctance to poke holes in hulls and then plug them?

    Spring Whitewater Paddling has Begun

Out here in the west, we've had a recent rain on snow event that caused flooding and washouts in a widespread area. It didn't make national news because few people live in the remote areas this happened. Speaking of remote, with things settled down to normal spring runoff, I had my first...

    Anyone paddle an OT Stillwater?

I do recall it being a nice looking boat, so I understand the interest. But I think you probably wouldn't be impressed with it on the water.

A boat for its trip - poling boat advice

Yes, all the videos I've seen of Lisa show her in a Camper. I used a Camper early in my poling career, and it's great in rivers that aren't rough - especially in the shallows. But I hated paddling it solo on the lake. And that's why I moved on to the Penobscot. But the Camper is easier for a...

    Anyone paddle an OT Stillwater?

I remember looking at a Stillwater 14 in the store (more than once) and thinking it was very much like my Navarro Legacy, but a foot longer. Flat bottom, keeled. Basically, a fishing and photography platform. Didn't take long for me to tire of the Legacy. I lost interest in the Stillwater...

A boat for its trip - poling boat advice

Was thinking about this some more and recalled that the Penobscot 16 is a pretty good poling canoe if the water isn't significantly technical. Not too much to solo with decent efficiency on mild water too. Same for, the Malecite with a tripping load (a little nervous when light). And if you...

A boat for its trip - poling boat advice

My first thought is I think it is not too late to order a Millbrook Souhegan, if you can pick it up from Kaz yourself. Designed for poling, but reported to be pretty good as a paddled solo. I wouldn't go with the Camper, as my experience was that it wasn't any easier to paddle solo in wind...

    Canadian tariffs and trip food

I have questions. For those of us who like to keep the weight down, what is the availability of non-imported freeze dried meals like in Canada? And if the meals are imported commercially from the US, aren't they already tariffed? So the cost is the same either way? Or tariffs don't work like the...
