    The Deep C Forward Stroke

^It's good instruction. I do that deep C stroke starting out or starting an onside turn all the time. Didn't know it had a name other than C stroke. It's definitely not for the limber-challenged. (Which I resembled early on)

    Wenonah Encounter - Why Not?

If I was reasonably confident that I could eventually sell it without taking much of a loss, I would consider buying it for that very reason. Maybe I'd hate it. Maybe I'd be surprised how much I like it. I never thought I'd like a bucket seat until I spent some time on one. The only bubble sided...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

@yknpdlr …. Why do those rules require a double? That would seem to imply that a single is some kind of advantage.

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I don't think you have to worry much about sketchy portages. I've banged on rocks and trees during carries with my kevlar canoes, and never got more than scratches. Yeah, scratches ain't pretty, but they don't really matter unless it's a boat I want to sell. But I think there can be a...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I'm sure Blukanu has made his choice, but the discussion continues. I don't think anyone's mind gets changed on this matter, since we tend to stick with what's working for us. I'll just revisit what I already posted... Since posting that, I've spent way more time paddling flat water than...

Deep scratch on my swift kevlar

I misread a pretty technical rapid last week and hit a rock I didn't see. Knocked a little chunk off the bow. A little thickened g-flex covered with plastic wrap fixed it right up. So many other scratches already, no one else will ever notice. :D

    Dynel Skid Plates

It doesn't take much, but I think you'll need a little more than that. I bought this can of it that will probably last me years. I've done skids on three boats and some smaller repairs and fabrications, and I've only used maybe 1/6 of the contents.

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

Appears that the Merlin is more similar to my Clipper Solitude. I don't need that redundancy. Come to think of it, that Wenonah Moccasin is probably an even closer match to the Merlin.

    Dynel Skid Plates

I always add graphite as pigment, just for the UV resistance. Like the "little black dress", it goes with any color.

    Nice O.G. Bell Merlin

What are the differences between the Merlin and the Merlin 2?

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

IME, the heeling isn't even the point - as far as efficiency or tracking. If you're paddling near the middle, getting close to one side makes it easier to paddle effectively. It just happens to cause the boat to heel, depending on the load. The only other reasons to want to heel the boat would...

I think I still have a photo. I'll have to look through my files and get back to you.

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

Biggest game changer for me has been my first canoe pole and Harry Rock's book and video. That increased my time on moving water immensely, and got me to places that wouldn't otherwise be accessible to me. The book got me started, but the video got me past the plateau. Other than that, yeah...

Deep scratch on my swift kevlar

Well, sorry about your new boat getting blemished. But you should see my kevlar canoes.

    Old Town Pack?

    Sure looks like it.

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

Yeah, I sleep on my side. If your hammock is an asymmetrical design like the Hennessy Hammock, it's easy to lay diagonally in the flat trough. The trick is to have the right amount of "swag" in the hang. Once you've done it a couple times, it's not hard to set it up right the first time. Never...

Converting Penobscot 16 into a solo...

Wenonah used to (maybe still does?) sell a kit for making your original yoke a quick-release. It basically consisted of a pair of strap hinges with associated bolts and nuts. You would bolt the long narrow half of each hinge to the underside of the ends of the yoke, and bolt the short wide...

Converting Penobscot 16 into a solo...

Looks good. I would have kept a yoke in the center, but whatever works for you.
