Tired of restrictive headnets, try this

Lol, that would be a hoot, especially when the Purple Martin swallow starts attacking our head gear after a couple of wobbly pops.

    Wood Glue versus Epoxy

I've been on the titebond 3 express for a couple of years now. Last year, my students built over 30 paddles with it. this year we are at around 20 more. I ran out in January, and the truck carrying my amazon order must have crashed, because it got lost, so it took me over a month to re-supply...

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

I had thought about doing something like that, but two things deterred me: I'm probably not smart enough to do that, and I wanted to still have the full Pal forms in case I build another full size Pal. It will be interesting to see how it performs. Got the second set of stems glued up today and...

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

Started the Stems for the modified Pal solo. This is the 1/8 inch method, no steaming involved. Outer stem is maple, inner stem cedar. Took them off this afternoon, solid as a rock,no breaks.

Paddles: Shaft Length? Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Grip?

I really like an asymmetrical grip in a straight shaft paddle. However, I'm not a switch hitter, I always paddle from one side. I find the flat surface against my palm is a nicer fit, and when turning the grip up for the end of the j stroke, it just feels better. A 57 to 58 inch paddle sounds...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Interesting, do the Wabakimi maps not provided waypoints for ports and campsites? I have a collection of canadian topos 1:50 in digital form somewhere, it will take me a few days to find them, but I'll internet them to you.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

I'll probably reduced bow and stern height a couple of inches, but I still want it to look traditional. Once I have the stations set up, I'll be able to get a better sense of the proportions.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

I'm on March break right now, a week off from school. When I get back, I am going to start the Pal solo build. I've got a couple of good kids for the entire afternoon, so I'm pretty sure they will be able to finish it before the end of June. The forms for the Pal start with one centre form...

    Trade Wars to Affect Tripping?

I know there are quite a few serious playboat/white water types that head to the States every year around this time, there are a few organized whitewater type things that they go to. Can't remember exactly where it was, but does Tennessee seem right? I would still really like to make a tour of...

How much safety is too much safety?

I guess I live on the edge. I seldom wear life jackets, and I can't imagine wearing a helmet, unless I was on my quad.

The effect of tariffs on the paddling industry

True, I have never bought a high end canoe either, so tariffs on canoes don't directly affect me. I am very happy that I just bought my new canoe carrier, a Ford Ranger, built in Michigan. It would have been much more costly with a 25% tariff. In terms of political feistiness, I believe that...

The effect of tariffs on the paddling industry

It would be interesting to see a spread sheet of each company in terms of domestic vs foreign sales. I'm only guessing, but I'm thinking that there are a lot more Canadian canoes sold in Canada compared to American made. I'm wondering if it is the same in the States, with American made canoes...

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

I met with Phil several times in Thunder Bay. Between Phil and Hoop, I was guided through the double speak Orwellian language of the MNR forestry planning process. Phil was not only involved with Wabakimi, he was also trying to change the value system for the forestry plans around him. Using the...

    A Raven from Scratch

If you want something different, you could always build a traditional type canoe. The Jack's Special (Chum) is really nice, just not sure where you would acquire plans now.

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

Aslowhand has summed it up pretty well. There is very little private land in Northern Ontario outside of municipalities and Indigenous reserves. If your canoe route is not listed as a functioning park, then it is most likely Crown Land.

    A Raven from Scratch

The most builds I've had going at once was three, so you are catching up. There seems to be a move to maybe start using cedar strips for the Outers club again, going to try to find the money to build them a solo this year. Another Raven? maybe, or a cut down Pal.

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

I dunno Boreal, I'd be happy to see you, although real estate prices in G-Town have exploded because of the mine, Nakina still has relatively cheap houses. No grocery store, no medical services, but unlimited bush. You could probably drive a quad from your house to a spot on the Drowning for...

    A Raven from Scratch

You can skip the soaking step if you cut your strips at 1/8 inch. That's what I did for the last stems I built for the Raven, and the angle was much more severe than your seats. You could skip the epoxy for the seats too if you got some titebond 3. That's good stuff.

    A Raven from Scratch

Don't know about you fellas down in the 11th province, but up here the 2024 ranger only comes with the super crew and five foot box. It's a very comfortable ride, probably use the trailer for wood, still afraid to scratch it.

    A Raven from Scratch

The tree tops are available for firewood, the problem is that area is too far away to make it viable to get them. If I'm up there I'll sometimes load the truck up on the way back, but I've got spots a lot closer to get most of my firewood. One of my students built a raven as well, and he used...
