    Shenango River in Western PA

Does anyone have experience paddling the 23 miles of the Shenango River between Pymatuning Reservoir and Shenango River Lake? There is a published water trail here, but not much info. Best I could find is that it’s a class I float...

    Mad River cold crack repair

@dcloots has made repairs on cold cracks of similar lengths. You will see them in his videos.

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

I would think stern lines would come into play if the belly straps fail when slamming on the brakes?

    Old Town Penobscot 17

It’s a shame the overspray isn’t over the entire hull. Then it would look intentional. Haha

    Outfitting, Maintenance and Repair Preparations

I would drill your hole at the bottom of the crack before removing your gunwales to prevent it from getting worse while working the gunwales off. Also, I would recommend making sure the heads of all the screws in the gunwales are fully exposed and not covered in gunk or have small splinters...

    WTB Mid-Weight Tandem Tripper

I found a used Souris River Quetico on the North American Canoe Trader Facebook Page. It needs some work but it’s the right price and weight. I’m not a member on Facebook anymore so if the link doesn’t work you could probably find it yourself. I believe this is located in Michigan...

    Spirit II vs. Prospector 17

I believe Confluence Outdoors, their parent company, announced in 2022 they were going to stop making Mad River Canoes. I may not be the most up to date though.

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

Adam, I don’t have experience with it, but I’m sure we could figure it out. Starting a new thread is a good idea. There are quite a few paddle makers in this site. Glenn, The cracks aren’t very long and only extend 1-3 inches below the gunwales. The g-flex yellow doesn’t clash too bad...

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

Update: I apologize for the delay. Life gets in the way sometimes. My last post ended with epoxy curing in the cold cracks. After the epoxy cured I took the advice you all have given me and drilled out the existing holes in the hull with a larger bit. I also got to work cleaning, sanding...

Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

I agree the Garmin Striker system is a good budget friendly ($199) portable sonar unit. You’d likely have to buy a suction cup mount for it. You can power it with a small 12V battery. Buying lithium would cut the battery weight by 60% and increase run time. This unit can also double as an ice...

    BWCA Permits

I think I’m seeing a similar thing happening at the campsites on Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes in the Adirondacks. I believe you can only book 9 months before your trip start date. It appears people are making a booking for the maximum number of nights for a campsite (14 days) to block out...

Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

I saw the same thing happen during a storm on Middle Saranac Lake. Momma duck and her ducklings were racing across the lake through wind and swells while a Loon was in close pursuit. I watched the Loon dive under the water, explode up onto the baby ducks, and drown them one after another. I...

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

Update: I picked up the boat on my way home from Maryland on Sunday. We made it home safe in some high winds and highway speeds. Aside from the cold cracks (which I terminated with drilled holes before leaving the sellers driveway) the boat is in pretty good shape. The hull wasn’t abused and...

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

I don’t feel so bad about the handful of small cracks in the boat I’m buying anymore. 🤣 PaddlingPitt, you always manage to tell a great story, and Kathleen always seems to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

Thanks everyone. The seller and I have agreed to a purchase price of $400. I feel good about this price. The seats are basically brand new and the wood is all in good shape. I am planning to pick the canoe up this Sunday. I will continue to post updates in this thread.
