PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

Yeah the Indus is a lot of money for a pfd, almost like they’re competing with Kokatat pricing. Personally, I’d have a hard time paying $400 for life jacket even if it is better. If you’re ok with not touching your toes or sitting down, 3 stacked gives you 51lbs of buoyancy 😏

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

More than I’d want to pay full price for but this came out last year and gets some hype in the WW world. I know a few people who use this regularly and really likes it. Super light, very comfortable, type V and 22lbs of buoyancy. https://astraldesigns.com/products/indus?variant=45129222095062...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

I’ll take a look around for the Eureka poles, they ceased operation a little while ago but I’m sure I can find some at cabelas or online. I know that Paria sells a pair for a little more and adjust up to 8’, and a few other companies as well. Thanks for the recommendation

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

@clemency I realize that’s a big tarp, and it’s unnecessarily big. It was the $130 price that intrigued me and the fact it’s a reputable company. Comparing the size down with CCS, its comparable in price and weight, but the MSR comes with poles. Which has pros and cons to it. I’ll probably stick...

    Training?

I’d like to add one more training technique. Yesterday I broke out the snow rake for the roof, it can reach about 2/3’rds on one side and just about all of the way on the other. The snow was heavy on bottom, light on top. If anybody has ever used a pole saw for any length of time, the manual...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

Does anybody have any experience with the MSR Rendezvous tarp? I have the opportunity to get the 200 for substantially lower in price than it’s advertised for. It’s nearly 7lbs, 200sqft (16’x18’) comes with two adjustable poles and the guy lines. That’s a massive tarp! I’ve been wanting a CCS...

    Training?

@Pseudonym let’s hope so! This winter is my 30th year snowboarding and 36th year total of being involved in skiing/snowboarding. I’m 39. I’ve seen every phase come through so far (minus the true beginning) and can remember not being allowed at certain resorts/hills, or having to walk uphill or...

    Training?

@Pseudonym Earn your turns indeed! Far different from resort skiing with no cost other than gear and knowledge. In the Midwest, the knowledge isn’t as crucial as for those friends out west but it sure helps you understand more about the snow pack and weather. I’ve only been skinning for about...

    Training?

Normally my summer work is A Lot of hiking with a pack on filled with my daily gear kit, a large chainsaw, gas/oil and a first aid kit. Or if I’m in wild wilderness it’s the same thing but swap the chainsaw for a crosscut and handsaws and swap gas/oil out for a peavy and axe. The combination of...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

Yes! There’s a lot of clickbait for that also and the comments are just a bunch of the same thing but from those armchair “actual know it alls”

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

I’d stay where I’m at in Northern lower MI or move a little more north. Even though others have mentioned it gets busy, they’re not wrong, there’s still plenty of spots to paddle with low to no crowds. Access to other areas that are a few hours away, have far less crowds and are always worth the...

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

What if you took in what everybody is saying, but incorporated a smaller faced blade? I know that the larger blade can grab too much water causing strain in the shoulders. https://wernerpaddles.com/collections/canoe-raft-touring/products/churchill-1-piece-bent-shaft Technically, yes, it’s a...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

I think there’s a lot of good that come from these videos we all watch, especially on YouTube. I think we all have taken something or several things away from them, locations, techniques, equipment, modifications, repairs, or maybe as a “movie” to watch. To me, the issue is less about those...

    Winter pants

I don’t know if anybody has an Eddie Baurer warehouse store near them but there’s usually good deals there. More than just the EB brand. There was one near me in Columbus that on saturdays would have a garage sale room and I’ve seen La Sportiva boots at 75%, Suunto Core watch for $50, Avalanche...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

The influencers like Bairds, Canoe the North, Lost Lakes, Ben Beauchamp, Tumblehome, etc appeal to us because it’s something we’re all passionate about. Some of them are more skilled than others, some we see grow their paddling skills, some disclose the area and most of them all have something...

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

I read this article a couple of months ago and couldn’t find it until this morning. I have a lot of opinions on this topic and I’ve changed my post twice now. Everything seems to be made for views and less about the passion. I think a lot of these influencers ARE passionate, but the followers or...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I think there’s a misconception of a composite kayaks being lighter, when they’re not that much different than a rotomolded kayak. Both of mine are probably close to 60lbs, fiberglass. Compared to canoes, plastics are heavy while composites are half the weight. Kayaks have so much more going on...
