    Photo of the day

No canoe in the photo, but a great campsite in the Yoop. Hope everyone is enjoying the nicer weather, here in N. MI we’ve been pretty steady in the mid 60’s to low 70’s

    Flaky epoxy

I’ve been MIA lately, just now taking some breaks. The wife and I have started multiple projects at the same time. A camper van conversion. I new bike build for me. We just put a new roof on. Yard/garden maintenance. The list goes and goes. I just read through everyone’s responses, two cents...

    Gear storage and trip packing

Hardly used the mud room as intended so it has become the gear room. Most things are in here, besides my snowboards, the dual burner and all of the fuel. It’s easy to throw more stuff on the shelves and “get to it later” … the wide angle photo makes the shelves look crooked, but I promise...

How much stuff do you take on a day trip?

Maybe a few snacks, a couple cold beers, water, pfd (which has a few safety items in the clam pouch), maybe a fishing pole, and the dog

    Michigan Canoeing

PS. The lower stretch of the Two Hearted (Bells Two Hearted beer mandatory for full effect) is really neat. The beach is great, plenty of personal space, and plenty of wild blueberries on the NCT stretch there. The drive back is dusty and 15 miles feels like 55. Cool spot though!

    Michigan Canoeing

I grew up in Charlevoix, and now currently live in Traverse City. A lot of good places have been mentioned already, but we have plenty of rivers and inland lakes. Both great for fishing and paddling. The Jordan has always been a fun river, cold but feels good on a hot summers day. It’s a locals...

    Food security

There’s advantages and then not to hanging. I love paddling through deep forests, that’s where I find My enjoyment. I guess that I’m lucky to live and play where I do, we do have tall trees reaching 80’-90’-120’, mostly forest trees. But, I do have plenty of birch, red pine, beech, ironwood, and...

    Food security

Sometimes I don’t think about a lack of trees. Almost every location I do and have paddled is covered in forest. But I can see that as more of a challenge. As well as living out in the PNW, I get the difficulties there. Our N. MI forests, least visited forests, are very thick with under layer...

    Flaky epoxy

It’s hard to tell, but I did wet sand this with a high grit, but you can see that there’s a few small raised areas that I didn’t sand completely off. Being my first time doing anything like this, second time with sanding a cloth material, I was hesitant on how far exactly to go. But maybe I...

    Flaky epoxy

I skimmed through some past posts and I didn’t see what I was looking for. Its mostly about full repairs or scratches, and I’m not worried about scratches at this moment. It’s possible I overlooked a post or didn’t read thoroughly. The hull of my canoe is flaking in sections and I’m not sure...

Bear hanging system It’s real light and very easy! Here’s another video link showing it a little easier. IMO.

    Food security

I strongly considered the Ursack but for some reason, that I cannot remember, I went with the Bear Vault. Which I am happy with, but very much agree with Glen on the volume change in food as you move through your trip. For that, I may switch to a Ursack since I hang my food anyways. So that...

Giving away gear to family or others?

I used to work at a gear store (10 yrs one in Columbus and one in northern MI), mom and pop style rei, and that was a ton of fun! Sales reps would come give clinics on the brand/s they worked for or give paddle days on the water. During those clinics we would often get swag, and beer. I...

    The Lowly Whistle: Critical Gear

in case anyone is still looking for a loud whistle to strap to their PFD Aztec whistle It’s known to be so loud, that it wakes up Chalchiuhtlicue, the goddess of water and gives good surf back to camp. Dang!

    Why Are You Here?

I was one of those googlers looking for answers during Covid and found more than i searched for. I became a member of my first forum. Since then, I’ve read many of your posts, trip reports, how to’s, routes, modifications and looked at many pictures. I keep coming back because I’m completely in...

    Carbon Straight Shaft

I cut my carbon shaft and taped it fora bit until I shortened it to where it felt good, a little shorter than my other paddles. Then i epoxied it and cleaned up the overspill that was squeezed out. I used shrink tubing over the seam to give it a cleaner look Andy protect it some. It’s a very...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Yes they are. Wilderness is one of the top dogs for recreational kayaks on the higher end. Still making the tsunami, tempest, and focus in their sea kayak rec touring line. I’m a big fan of the tempest and thing it’s one of the better poly boats. Perception is a good middle ground entry level...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Before I picked up my NS, I was eyeing a couple of MRC’s over mine. One was from a very nice Old woman, I think I’m her 80’s, had the light toned Kevlar Malecite in flawless condition. Her asking price was one I didn’t even want to negotiate. Then an Explorer for sale somewhere in MN, also in...
