    Why Are You Here?

I’m constantly, and endlessly thinking about canoeing. The stories from everyone on here. The maintenance and diy tasks. The jokes and kindness from everyone. You can tell it’s a community on here, from the oldest members to the newest members. From the most skilled to the brand new guy or girl...

    Ranting

We do accumulate stuff. It happens, especially as hobbies or life changes. I don’t know how many people I could give skis and snowboards to. How many wood working projects I could start. A lot of us basically have a gear store in our homes, and the inventory hasn’t stopped rolling in. My buddy...

    Wolves

I was going to say that almost every time I’ve been in the Porkies, a wolf would howl and quiet the coyotes down. Never seen one there, only seen tracks and heard them. Same with paddling Pukaskwa or LSPP

    Explain Your Screen Name

Real name is Eric, but I shortened it to Erk for social media purposes. Always been a fan of Viking or old folklores, as well as getting out and exploring. Land or water. I also have some unfortunate red in my beard. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What's in your front hall closet ?

We don’t have a hall closet, so the mudroom has become that sort of thing. Combination mudroom, closet, gear closet. So most camping, paddling, outdoorsy gear is in there.

    Why Buy A New Canoe?

I purchased two used canoes in pretty good shape within the last few years. One Kevlar, two years old at purchase. And one fiberglass, roughly 34 years old at purchase, garage kept and never used for most. Both canoes were priced great, and both needed some minor work. Seat/thwart/yoke repair...

    Thermal underwear recommendations?

I forgot to mention I use Smartwool, Ridge merino, and Arc’teryx base layers. I have also used the brand from Target, they have a “low-med-high” warmth rating. It works and it’s inexpensive.

    Thermal underwear recommendations?

The closer to your skin the more your piece will perform for you. Keeping you warmer, dryer, less clammy, and less stinky. Ultimately, merino from a number of brands will be the better option for most. There are differences in the types of merino, but all merino is still softer than the...

    Aurora Borealis

when I lived in Alaska they appeared almost every night. Especially cool on my drive into work. I’ve seen them here in Michigan as well, typically in the UP. Never while paddling, hoping to witness them on a paddling trip

    Show me your canoe truck

What are your thoughts on Rhino Rack? They seem to have stepped up their quality. Maybe I’ll look into them

Algonquin Park secret lake hotspot - Freedom of Information Act used to find identity

Just stumbled on this topic while searching for another one. Hypocritically searching. I was searching for a route I myself have never heard of, but find it to look like a good trip for my brother and I to do. Or just do in general. I read all of these comments and I can’t agree more with some...

    Michigan Canoeing

Very cool! Glad you enjoyed it here. I wish I would’ve reached out, I would’ve loaded my canoe up and met up with you. You hit many good spots, and did a pretty grand tour of the state. In my opinion, you also came at a good time. It might be windy, colder, rainy/snowy but the colors are good...

    Essential nonessentials.

I also bring a chair, it’s nice to relax comfortably and off the ground. Worth the added bulk. Coffee contraption. Either AeroPress, or an ultralight French press. Not a coffee snob, but neither of those take long, require much work and result in good tasting coffee. And a good #2 A journal...

    Any thoughts on drysuits?

I’ll add this small but important comment. If you, or whomever decides to get a drysuit, dry top/bottom, treat the gaskets with 303, or any protectant you choose, every few months. Many people never do, it’s fine, those that do, extend their season and their suits lifespan. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    DIY Vehicle tie down straps

I’ve used the loops with the tube many times, work great on any vehicle. I recommend the larger rubber tubes and not the hard plastic tubes, I’ve had the slip out on me. Could’ve been user error, but I’m not buying it.

    Carabiners

I also really like the Blackdiamond miniwire and the litewire. But if weight isn’t a concern, not that you’ll truly notice the difference in most cases, take alook at the Petzl spirit bent or the djinn bent. These also come in a straight gate and are non locking. The djinn is slightly bigger...
