    Long, Fast Solo Canoes

I have a GRB Classic XL, and at 16'8" length and widths of 26" Max and 22" gunwale width, I consider it long and fast. I generally pack light and had to switch from my Granite Gear #4 portage Pack to a 90+ liter backpack just to get my gear int the narrow canoe. I don't really care for a heavy...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

I think that I remember reading that they are a Carbon/Kevlar laminate, but I am not 100% positive on that; my memory banks are filling up after all these years. As light as it is, I do all I can to avoid rocks with it but I've got a Royalex canoe for that rocky river paddling. I do wet-foot...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

I can't exactly speak for the GRB Classic 15'8" as I have the GRB Classic XL (16'8"), but I can say that the canoe is surprisingly versatile. I bought it as a fun "go fast" canoe for day trips, but have also loaded it for a 4-5 day trip in the Adirondacks. It handled the extra load just fine...

    Throwback Thursday Photos

Is that an "internal sponson" for floatation under the gunwales of the Lotus?

You're going to run THAT in a canoe!?

Great video of classic western Canoeing. Thanks for posting.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I have now chosen my new high-floatation PFD for paddling whitewater in my open canoe, and it is not a brand that most paddlers have heard of. Since I started this thread looking for information on what I would label a “High Flotation Whitewater PFD”, I figured that would pass word on what I...

    paddle sizing

It seems that torso length, arm length and sitting height can all vary the "best" paddle length. I use a 54" to 56" straight paddle for solo paddling most of the time, a 50" to 52" bent shaft for speed and tripping, and a 58" to 60" for whitewater paddling. As the canoes differ, so do my...

    Looking for a Dagger Caption

How far do you mind travelling? There is one on FB Marketplace in Travelers Rest SC, one in Bryson City NC and one in Pelham AL. I found these in a quick check of the southeast. The ones in NC and SC are near good whitewater areas too; it might be good to get a boat and have a long river...

How much safety is too much safety?

I have not tried on a Type 1 PFD in quite a while, but the ones I remember were bulky and were not well fitted to the body for easy movement.

How much safety is too much safety?

+1 on that, and if it's not on you when you need it, you haven't got it.

How much safety is too much safety?

Sounds like a very good time to have had a hammer strap on your holster!

How much safety is too much safety?

One thing about personal choice versus mandated rule is that you get to decide on your actions but you accept the responsibility for those actions and how they reflect on the paddling community. I try to choose on my level of safety gear based on the activity and situation of that activity...

    Canoecopia 2025

I am envious of all you folk within a day's drive of Canoecopia. This is an event that I would love to check out some day not only for the new gear and seminars, but I cannot imagine that many canoeists in one place!

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I've not had it long enough to try a river trip but I have been surprised by the Wenonah Argosy in Royalex that I picked up a couple of months ago. It's 14'6"long, 30 1/4" wide and 13 1/2" center depth. It is a good handling canoe that I could see doing a river trip in and I will probably be...

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

I have never paddled one, but the design looks like it would make a great paddling C1. I am tempted by a Storm Chaser currently for sale in Asheville NC, but it is a size too small.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

All good points. Also add to the list : Check the fit. I lost 30 lbs. about a decade ago and had to throw out one PFD because though it fit before the loss, it would ride up under my armpits and about 4 inches above my shoulders without a belly to belt under it. Changes happen.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

The Indus is pricy, but it is on my short list. If it is a good fit I may decide to pay a bit more for the safety factor. Or maybe I'll buy two other PFDs for the same price and wear one over the other, giving me 32 lbs. of buoyancy for the same cost.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I wonder how many canoeists GAIN buoyancy as they age?

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

If you are considering C1 decked canoes, add River Elf. They make composite C1s and kayaks.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

I was wondering about the bulk and comfort of the Hi-Flotation models. I would definitely be trying it on before buying, even though I might get funny looks from the kayakers while kneeling in the store. I also plan on different PFDs for different conditions. I have my Stohlquist Ebb for...
