Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

Agreed. It’s just like wilderness canoeing. People who don’t do it think it is so dangerous when driving to the grocery store kills more people.

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

The article states they were in shallow water and paddled over (presumably unintentionally) a 10 foot gator, which then thrashed capsizing the canoe. In this case, the gator almost surely was startled awake and/or interpreted the canoe as an attack. Florida John is correct; it is mating season...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I kept trying to marry a man who would take the extra load and heavy canoe. ;) But no luck. I can see I’m out of luck with this bunch. But I love you all anyway.

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

I remember now. The first trip we drove to Press and got on the train there. The next time we took the train from one of the outfitters near Lac Faillon. I’ve looked for my pictures of the trip but cannot find them. There is one difficult portage around a major falls. It is fun to watch...

I’ve taken that train ride twice and don’t remember it being particularly onerous.

Side flotation: How it helps emptying water and assisting re-entry

When I took some solo whitewater lessons from Jimmy Yocum at Nantahala, he made me swamp the canoe and get it to shore before he did anything else with me.

What do you use for a table?

Flattish rock if available. On the ground otherwise. I am more comfortable sitting on the ground with various pots, food stuffs, stove, etc. spread out around me within arms’ reach.

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River part 12. We last saw me standing in cold water, wet to the skin and cold to the bone. And it is raining. My assessment is that my brain is still working rationally, that I should not try to paddle further that day, that I should make camp and get warm. I tied the canoe up securely...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Looking forward to hearing about it. As recped already knows, I've paddled the first part of that river twice some 30 years ago and am really interested to see what it looks like now (ie. more roads and logging apparent in google earth.) Have a great trip!

Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

Canoe Markets When I was in the "back country" in Costa Rica, there were lots of canoes traveling up and down the river, carrying bananas to market, people going from villages into town. There was even a canoe that just ferried back and forth over the river for the people who walked the trails...

Tour owner jailed for 10.5 years for weir drowning deaths of 4 customers

I took a rafting trip in Costa Rica. The river was in flood stage, so the upper stretch was bypassed. I did put my faith in the company and guide. We all survived, but I noticed the guide was looking stressed out trying to manage the class IVs. I. Probably would not do that again.

Other than the USA and Canada, what country has the most open canoes?

Projected sales of canoes and kayaks (the article did not separate them out) is highest for the “Asia Pacific” region, with the map showing greatest growth in Australia and India. The area showing the most sales however, outside of North America, is in Europe. But the study did not separate out...

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River, Summer 2023. Paddling Pitt, isn't it nice to know you were correct the first time? ;) The big excitement for this rest day is pancakes! I bring my own mix of whole wheat flour, powered milk, powdered eggs, sugar, and baking powder. Just add water. In all these years, I have never...

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

The Mad River Explorer gets my vote, for all the same reasons already listed. I don’t like the bucket seats of the Winona. I’m not sure what model I had, but the Winona did not handle well in the wind.

    Balancing weight and durability

Just paraphrasing Davidson and Rugge here but, when you're out in the wilderness those six $100 bills are just paper and they won't even start a fire.
