    Barbless hooks

I not only pinch the barbs down on all my hooks but I clip off two of the three hooks on a treble hook. It helps to minimize the damage inflicted to a fish's jaw, throat, and especially gills. I don't mind losing a good fish now and then because of it.

Thanks. Sometimes good pictures just appear and you happen to have a camera/smart phone handy. :)

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

eckilson - The examples you provided has convinced me to give Photoshop Elements another try. I've used Picture Window Pro to make corrections (cropping, color balance, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc) for so long that it's become routine. But getting rid of unwanted objects takes time; it...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Interesting. I had a much older version of Photoshop Elements (before AI corrections were available) and much preferred a program called Picture Window Pro, now available as freeware with a suggested $25 donation from Digital Light & Color. https://www.dl-c.com/Downloads.html What caught my...

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

Interesting discussion(s), and timely. I was introduced to the Garmin inReach line of satellite messengers this summer on a canoe trip and especially liked the ability to get up-to-date weather forecasts. Came in handy one day when thunder storms had originally been predicted a few days before...

    Wenonah "Blem" Canoe

The Kevlar cloth on my canoes was exposed in a few of the deeper voids and was eventually starting to fray with wear. I just dabbed some epoxy on it so the fabric was saturated and filled the void but I'm not sure that it would work the same with the newer vinyl ester resin. Hopefully you'll get...

    Wenonah "Blem" Canoe

Without seeing the entire hull I'd say it's not something I'd worry too much about. I have two Wenonah Kevlar skin coat canoes with numerous small voids like that and I didn't get any discount. It worried me a bit at first but now that both of the boats are over 30 years old and still in good...

Things you've found on a canoe trip

We found many horse skulls and other bones at one of our campsites on the Spatsizi River. It was like a horse burial ground had been unearthed. Very eerie place and we almost moved to another campsite but it was late in the day and we were wet and tired. Plus, it was a nice spot and we weren't...

Videos demonstrating many of the freestyle reverse moves

Hi, Glenn, Perhaps Steve (or Charlie) will provide more details but I have a digital version of the original instructional DVD that I got through freestylecanoeing.com FreeStyle Canoeing - Tom MacKenzie Produced in 1994, the credits show the location to be Lake Parsippany, N.J. In addition to...

Explorer Creek, Chugach National Forest Alaska

Me either really, but my crew and I didn't have much to do while we were stationed in Girdwood at the time so doing some local canoeing would have been a great diversion from hanging out at the local bar. :) Nice rainbow and Dolly.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

I've noticed the scarcity of canoes across the country as well. Seems you just don't see many except in the canoeing hot spots. I was especially surprised when I moved from the Pacific Northwest (where canoes are relatively rare) back to New England (where canoes used to be fairly common) and...

Explorer Creek, Chugach National Forest Alaska

Boy, your post brings back memories. I worked out of Girdwood one year and the Forest Service would let our crew use the Portage Glacier visitor center to take a shower once a week or two. A few times we took the train to Whittier for work out in Prince William Sound. While I was there I wished...

2024 Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium, July 18-21

The Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium at Paul Smiths College is a fun event, especially since the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association's gathering is that same week. I've attended three of the AFCS events and always learn something new. The Building Blocks courses are a good refresher on the...

Padding on cross bars for canoe?

I do like gunwale stops for that reason but I've found that the Yakima gunnel stops do abrade and rub off on wood gunwales. But similar to Glenn and ScottS, I consider canoes to be sporting goods, and though I try to take care of my canoes I don't worry about a bit of black rubber marring the...

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

New purchases that have been great, even game changers There have been many great purchases over the years, but the game changers for me were lightweight Kevlar canoes and lightweight carbon bent shaft paddles. Ease of handling and efficiency took canoeing to another level. Not necessarily...

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

For canoe tripping we use a Littlbug Senior twig stove for boiling water, frying, and having a small fire for ambience but for boiling smaller amounts of water and cooking, especially simmering, we use an alcohol stove. It's a MiniBull Bongo Pro (plus turbo ring) with a Big Gulp Remote reservoir...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

This our new Swift Prospector 13 solo on our Subaru Crosstrek. This is the first time I've had the canoe out since I picked it up over at Tupper Lake a couple weeks ago. Thought I'd take advantage of a warm April day to test it out. First impressions are not always worth paying attention to but...

Detachable Yoke for Swift Carbon Gunnels

No worries, I wasn't offended. I was going to explain in my earlier post but didn't. I guess I didn't explain well enough that the bolt that slides into the plastic knob probably has a squared section (right below the round head) that fits into a corresponding inset in the knob, just like a...
