Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

Glenn, perhaps we'll get a chance to meet and talk canoeing. Are you bringing a canoe with you?

Adirondack Freestyle Canoe Symposium July 17-20, 2025

We go over early to the AFCS to attend WHCA events and do some canoeing locally. The canoes displayed on the green are beautiful.

What is your local day paddle?

Somerset would be a great place for camping, especially the northern end. I haven't paddled Sadawga Lake or Harriman Reservoir yet but friends say they're worth the drive. We're closer to Rutland. We canoe Chittenden Reservoir, Glen Lake, Lake Hortonia and Otter Creek on a regular basis...

2025 Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous

Wish I could be there but will miss it AGAIN. Family takes priority, but still. ;)

New Family Canoe - Souris River Quetico 18.5

That Quetico 18.5' should be a great family canoe. Enjoy your adventures!

What is your local day paddle?

One of my favorite places in Vermont to canoe. Wish it was a bit closer but we have some good spots in southern Vermont.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

There's been an increase in this lung disease in parts of Vermont, especially after the repeated flooding of the past few years.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

Brown recluse spiders aren't something I've ever thought about but if they're showing up outside the normal range I'll be paying more attention. When I lived in the Pacific Northwest I learned to always look for black widow spiders but was never fearful of them. They're pretty docile unless you...

Side flotation: How it helps emptying water and assisting re-entry

I don't know about making it easier to re-enter a capsized canoe but I've used side flotation bags (10" x 40") in my 18.5' Odyssey tandem and it works great keeping the canoe stabilized when big whitecaps swamp the canoe. We were on a stretch of the Columbia River when the wind started howling...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

Thanks for the historical perspective, Glenn. Enjoyed rereading that thread.

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

There aren't many places in the lower 48 where you can canoe in those conditions and surroundings. I do miss the variety of paddling opportunities in the PNW but am thoroughly enjoying the canoeing here in the northeast.

    Dog in an Advantage?

Must be well behaved. And mellow.

My 1986 VW Jetta GLI, when they were still made in Wolfsburg, Germany. That was a great car. My 1990 Wenonah Odyssey. Great canoe. Still have it. Pulled this canoe like a sled into Rainey Lake, about a mile off the North Cascades Highway in Washington. Had a couple big dumps of snow in October...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

I didn't mean to suggest he was compromising in order to write for Canoesport Journal, but thought it was interesting how people and their priorities change over time. Mike Galt obviously loved both solo and tandem canoeing, just had different priorities at different times in his life. Note: I...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

Good point, but I was thinking more about his perspectives on solo and tandem sport canoeing. I went back and looked at Mike Galt's first article for Canoesport Journal (Vol. 1, No. 1, Autumn 1987) and this is what he starts out with: "Tandem Magic" "Tandem! Funny. Time was when I wouldn't be...

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

Interesting that Mike Galt wrote about tandem sport canoeing in his "Tandem Moves" section of Canoesport Journal.

Canoe odyssey just begun from NW-most to SE-most points in USA

And here I thought the question "what is a canoe" had unambiguously been answered in this thread: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/what-is-a-canoe.128510/ What is a canoe? Whatever the heck you think it is since there will never be consensus. 😄

    Throwback Thursday Photos

It's a unique stretch of the Columbia. The reminders of our development and use of nuclear warfare give it an almost surreal backdrop. I recommend stopping along the way and climbing to vista points to better see what's out there on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. I feel fortunate to have...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

I got busy and then was traveling for a bit so haven't been working on it. I may try to visit the Newman's shop so I can try one out before I buy.
