    Phantom Posts

Interesting that Bing says the post is from 2012 when Benson's link is from 2017. I Googled the same search term and the first hit was the Canoetripping post that Benson linked and I had no problem accessing it. It correctly showed as 2017 in the search preview. Alan

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

Looks good to me. Most of us use thin epoxy and mix in a thickening agent to make it thick. But I once used some pre-thickened epoxy, similar to what's shown in your link, that came as part of a kit and it was really nice to use. Alan

    Solo Canoe for Dogs

I had no problems carrying a 60 pound springer spaniel in a Bell Magic. We would paddle the local rivers and lakes and fish from it. There was room behind the seat for a pack. But unless you're comfortable in relatively narrow solo canoes I wouldn't make a blanket recommendation of it. Since...

    Barbless hooks

Plus, when fishing with kids, it makes it much easier for them to release their own fish. Alan

    Potomac day trip from Hancock

I'd never thought of that option but a Brompton might work. https://us.brompton.com/ Alan

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

I also think filling the chipped out areas with thickened epoxy would be good enough. If you thought you might expose the hull to similar abuse in the future then some sort of skid plate would be warranted. Alan

    Solo Canoe for Dogs

How big are the dogs? Alan

    Hi from NH

There is a classified forum here where you can list the boat for sale. https://www.canoetripping.net/forums/classifieds.44/ List your location and the more pictures and information the better. Most people on this site would be interested in buying a boat to actually use so they'll want to see...

    Final curing of epoxy boats

A couple days ago I needed to remove the grip from a ZRE paddle to shorten it. This paddle had already been shorted once and the grip installed with RAKA epoxy. I've had some factory ZRE paddles where the epoxy easily softened for removal and others where I didn't think it would ever let go. I...

    Two rescues in one day

Nice saves. On my normal walk they created a carp barrier consisting of large rocks to keep carp from traveling from the lake to the slough. In the spring turtles heading to the slough fall into the gaps in the rocks and get stuck. I check every day or two. Usually about a dozen each year.

    Final curing of epoxy boats

I don't know about any hull manufacturers but it's common for many epoxy products to be heat cured. They're placed in ovens to cure. I don't know how much of this is for toughness and how much is to extend the layup time as the epoxy won't cure until warmed up. I don't know if science behind...

    Loud wooden pole

I always thought the best way to get on their good side was to wait until you were within casting distance and then point to the water next to the canoe and say, "wow, there was just a big one right there!" Alan

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

While a lot less likely I could see it happening. Attached to the outside of the hull seems less likely in most circumstances since canoes and kayaks aren't generally sitting in the water for long periods of time but I can see invasive plants being lodged in skegs and rudders. Or even...

Converting Penobscot 16 into a solo...

I think when it comes to thwarts the necessity, if there is one, will depend on usage. If you're running rapids, paddling in big wind and waves, or traveling over tough portages where the boat might get dropped then maybe it would be a good idea to put in some extra ones. If you're just going...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

That's true. When I joined this forum my canoe looked like this: 20160405_004 by Alan, on Flickr And now it looks like this: 20161017_002 by Alan, on Flickr

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Just to clarify a little nomenclature: Your canoe is not made with epoxy but rather a vinylester resin. That's the same thing you're getting with your repair kit. It will work fine but just keep in mind that mixing it is different than epoxy. Don't assume all the advice you read about epoxy...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

My opinion is that the only scratches that need any sort of repair are ones where the cloth is showing and even then it usually isn't strictly necessary. I don't worry much about superficial scratches. They happen and the less you worry about them the happier you'll be. I've never bothered...

    First build, sanding issues...

It's usually easier to fill low spots with thickened epoxy rather than trying to sand the rest of the hull down to match. Unless you're a real perfectionist don't look too close. It will be fine. Alan

    Cree River Summer 2023

I personally think that's a great option but, unfortunately, it doesn't satisfy the worrying mother at home because she would just assume I'm dead or injured and unable to activate the PLB. Alan
