    NFCT Northstar B 16 raffle

I dont understand how their raffles work. I asked about the process during each of the last two and got no response. They don't provide confirmation numbers, odds, drawing method, or anything else. Seems odd. Don't get me wrong, I play every time because I like the organization, but the raffles...

    RIP Dan Cooke

We spoke at Canoecopia 2024 and it was evident he was unwell. I wish the family peace as they grapple with the holes left by his death. I have many pieces of gear from his business legacy. All are very well thought out and of quality workmanship. I hope to see the continuation of his name...

Recommend a coffee maker? I'm done bearing a heavy thermos

For travel or home use? For home use, anything on the following list will be excellent. I like the Bonavita and OXO, currently on my second Bonavita. https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer For travel and office use, I have an Aeropress Go and an Aeropress XL. https://aeropress.com/ You...

How do you deal with loud talkers?

I am the loud talker. I have a very large and resonant chest, which combine with my low baritone to create a sound that.... travels. Even with hushed tones, it just kinda rumbles along like a well-muffled V8. It is something I am conscious of (even a bit self-conscious), and I make sure to let...

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Tough one! Ecologically, probably the Bradford Pear. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/how-we-turned-the-bradford-pear-into-a-monster/2018/09/14/f29c8f68-91b6-11e8-b769-e3fff17f0689_story.html

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Nova Craft finally got back to me. They had much the same opinion as you folks. They also offered to sell me a full width piece of the matching material for $340. Do you think that would be worth it? Put a couple fiberglass patches down, epoxy the rib cracks, and then homogenize the interior...

What is your favorite tree and why?

The white oak. Stout, hardy, and provider of food for my favorite game species. The late falling leaves protect birds in the winter and add cover to my late season hunts. I love the shapes of the lobed leaves, and the straight grained wood makes fine furniture.

This is great news. Might be able to buy that SRT yet...

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

It is a significant relief to hear experienced paddlers say its "not as bad as..." I am now more confident that I can bring it back to factory strength. I assume most aramid composite repairs are similar, in that some poking around here for past threads about the repair process should...

@memaquay I put it on a tension scale today and she sits at 41.8 lbs. @Glenn MacGrady Heh. No, I don't reckon that will happen again. Those lessons have a way of sticking around. Here are some more photos. If other angles help, just let me know. It's not going anywhere anytime soon...

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

@sailsman63 @Alan Gage @memaquay If you were to add a full piece of cloth to the inside of the hull, aside from any patching, would you use s-glass or aramid? What weight? Would it be worth using epoxy over vinylester?

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! It will be an opportunity to learn some new skills, for sure. I'm trying to get Nova Craft to quote me a full-length piece of material, they only want to do up to 24" square in their repair kits. I had a very long day today, so I haven't gotten around to a...

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Well, I went and picked it up last night. No soft spots, condition as described. The "jellyfish" marks do indeed appear to be from fibers pulling away from the gel coat as a result of impact. Obviously, this shows with a clear coat, and would not with a color coat. I was very pleased with the...

Four friends, seven days, 100 km of paddling on a lake tour in Germany's most beautiful paddle region

If that doesn't describe the draw of the sport, I don't know what does. Great sentiment.

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Thank you for the encouragement. It is the type of canoe that I want, I reckon I will have to see if this specific hull is my jam. It appears to be a 2004 from the HIN, which would put it in the earliest runs of this layup. The seat has been replaced at one point and will be replaced again soon...

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

Good advice, thank you. You are the second person to advise that the "spiders" are from fabric strands delaminating from the gel coat. It makes sense. I will be very thorough in checking the hull integrity. Good eye on that inside pic, I had not noticed that before. Looking over all the...
