    Poetic favorites

Seeing Wallace to Sasaginnigak via "Bloodvein" I couldn't help but marvel at the wonderful place -names we have the honor of traveling on. One of my favorites is Windfall Brook, ( as seen on a map- it looks gorgeous- unfortunately private property but tantalizing) . Opalescent River, Ghost Brook...

    Why I trip alone

I feel blessed that I have someone who shares my wavelength. We're in it together and share our strengths and weaknesses, lazy or dreamily inclined or A type insanely employed- setting up camp really fast on a bright sunny day; just in case - he's been through his own bout with a rare form of...

    What are you reading?

Right now I'm reading maps....... I don't go anywhere without one- I'll pull it out at the laundromat to keep me company. I loved reading Thomas Hardy when camping. My tent was in harmony with his lyricism. I highly recommend The Worst Journey in the World", an amazing account by Apsley...

    Not Books - Newspapers

My husband once found a bunch of Daily News from WW2 under the linoleum in a house he was working on. The paper smoothed out the plank floor before they laid the linoleum down. The funnies were in good condition... news and photos vivid yet faraway, incredible to realize this was not so long...

    New paddling partner

No Title That's what we say, too. Your dog is lovely. Be careful, red... when our pup, Shiloh, was 2 she seemed to be asleep while we were paddling, and all of a sudden she leapt up and tipped us over. That will be the first and last time........ Yours looks just right- how big will she be...

Has a bear ever gotten your food?

I love horseshoe crabs! This brings back memories of my father, who was no outdoorsman, trying to teach me the wonderful peculiarities of life on earth! Look, Susie!

    Black bears that appear threatening

I know of 2 people near us who swear they've seen mountain lions near us. (Shawangunk Mts). Also there were several sightings up north near Meacham Lake and other spots in Franklin County. Alan, I'd be sweating and Singing I think, if I were in Jeff's place. Amazing he had his wits about him...

Has a bear ever gotten your food?

No, we hang our food. But a number of years ago on Low's lake, there was a mother and her adolescent busking for food. We heard everyone, up and down the lake yelling " go away, go away, go away..." next day, we checked out a couple of vacated sites, and saw some lonely Cheez Doodles swirling...

    Black bears that appear threatening

This happened to us @ 8 years ago. My husband opened a CAN OF SARDINES and emptied the juice in a river. Half an hour later we stopped for a snack in a remote area (in the ADKs) and as I passed him a cracker ( my back to the river) his face changed . He started saying "What's a Belgian...

    Map Case

Nice. I just fold the map(s) we're using for the day and stuff them into a fanny pack that's tied to the seat struts. Over the years my maps have become shredded, worn and nearly useless with age, but I kind of like that. I laugh every time I pull out the "collection". Old dogs.

Bunny hunting, snow shoeing and bang sticks

Re: snowshoeing, my husband got me a beautiful pair of Canadian GV snowshoes, traditionally made, but the bindings keep slipping. Never had this problem before. If Memaquay, or anyone knows of a good binding, most appreciated. Looked at Bob Maki Northwoods 621100) online- they're rubber and a...

    Journaling on your trip.

I keep all of my camping permits. Now they're computer generated, but they used to be hand-written. Souvenirs of good times. Here's one thought buried and resurrected: still, and incarcerated within a fluid world the drowned trees drink forever
