My 5th "Final Canoe": A Swift Carbon Fusion Keewaydin 15, at 80

" Your final canoe, who are you kidding?" At 73 I leapfrogged all the way down to the 20 pound 12 foot North star ADK for my "Final" canoe.A little short but fits inside an Otter Floatplane. No portage yoke as I just hang it over one padded shoulder and grip the stowed double blade for the...

    Winter pants

Still some army surplus wool pants on the internet. Medium weight wool is great for a wide range of temps with thermal worn under. Even damp it is still warm. Mix and match and good for -30 F while walking.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Since I never single blade any more I was willing to use my beavertail and carbon bent for the comparison. They were long enough that two bolts through the top of the shafts gave me the preferred 270 cm length in the new double blade. The bent shaft lost in all categories until I twisted it 180...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Glenn, you.make fair points but I sense most paddlers do not spend enough time in their boats to hone the single blade. Easier and more enjoyable to grab the double and head across the water. Maybe like getting hooked on coffee, it takes time to get past the taste.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I cruise along mindlessly at 5.5 to 6 kph in most situations with my double blade, I own no kayak paddles or Kayaks but my ADK Pac boat could be called a topless kayak. It likes 7 kph using my Werner Camano 260. I am sensing here that we are getting pleasure from different parts of the paddling...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I know I jumped to the dark side early in my canoeing life because of a work related injury to a shoulder. Back then you got eaten alive if you mentioned canoeing with a double.Grabbed a kiddie kayak paddle one day and found relief so ordered a 5 pound nine foot Carlyle double for $40 and never...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Plus 1 on all that cruiser has said. The better a person is at using a single blade the less they will like a double. I stink with a single blade and always use a double and love it except when I need to do sweeping strokes on one side fighting angled winds. BTW, it is nice to have a...

    Trip photography.

I have gone to mostly video on canoe trips. I then edit all the clips into a video for youtube. Canoe videos are not too popular but at least I can look back on them in the years ahead. The camp life is certainly the most enjoyable to revisit. I store a copy of the video in case of online issues...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

With the introduction of 20# canoes this may be doable for more of the younger crowd. Shorter trip the easier too. Having gone through the herneated disc thing I would never recommend it for longer trips. You may manage it but the toll it takes on your spine and knees is not worth it in the long...

    More grocery store options.

From the grocery I rely on Hamburger Helper and add dried ground venison. Tuna Helper with tuna packets or cans. Tortilla wraps with the tuna salad packets or P&J. Martha White Pizza Crust mix slow fried in a covered pan with liberal oil. Instant potatoes and various Knorr pasta and rice...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I never build a fire to just have a fire. I find them too noisy both visibly and audibly. A fire seems to have me transfixed on the flames instead of looking over the lake to distant shores and what is going on there.

Atikaki Prov. Park Manitoba 6 weeks in 2024

The way we do it it only cost $600US for in and out. If you flew a canoe in with us and paddled south for exit probably $500US. $200 each time a canoe is tied on so we use the same canoes for everyone.

I have paddled a lot of the park and can share GPS file as there is no map out there that is of much use.

Atikaki Prov. Park Manitoba 6 weeks in 2024

A great trip with great friends in Atikaki, a seldom canoed park in Manitoba. WE fly in canoes to base camp and then groups rotate through. You tube video below

    The nature of speed.

I picked up a used Northstar 12 foot ADK because it would fit inside an Otter float plane but figured it would be yawing all over on the water. On the first upstream paddle I was happy to see how well it tracked and stayed right with my friend paddling the Prism 17 solo. Checking my speed with a...

    Hatchet or Saw?

I like to drop into untraveled areas by float plane so I prefer a chainsaw. There might not be a campsite and the portages are only used by moose and caribou. I also like a 24 inch pruner. I skip the hatchet to stay light weight. LOL

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

I too feel the Helinox Sunsetter chair, Exped thick sleeping pad and 3 man tent are now necessities! We do fly-in bushwhack base camp canoe trips so my luxury items are a chainsaw and Gazelle pop up screen shelter.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

An Encounter is my favorite solo for tripping. Crossing miles across a lake the tailwind got fierce. I was in an Encounter and took on a little water. If in my prism it would have been a long float in a semi sunken canoe. Paddling up narrow streams the Encounter exceeded as I could kneel in the...
