    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

I was up at Long Pond yesterday and Dunham today also. Beautiful day and 10 degrees cooler than the flatlands. Counted 22 boats at one point and that was missing a few. Good pictures.

    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

Dunham Res is actually outside the park gates even though it has been incorporated into the park - so no fees any time of year. There are a couple of parking/launch options and while it can get crowded during the summer it's unlikely to be a problem after Labor Day. Not the greatest lawn/...

    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

Grafton is my backyard so I'm pretty familiar with it - I was on Long Pond yesterday. Just to mention, there is no camping there, if that is needed for people traveling a distance. Grafton does get pretty busy and "boom boxy" at the main beach, but we're not talking the Adirondacks, of course...

Jump on a deal blind, or wait for Solo Rendezvous?

If you are planning a trip to try the Boreas, it might be a good time to test paddle any Northstars you are interested in. I have a Firebird on the road to Racquette Lake Outfitters and that trailer may well be dropping inventory at the Bolton Landing dealer also. I'd be happy to let you try my...

    Hello from the Hudson Valley!

Welcome, neighbor. I'm in Troy and while I used to frequent the Chatham/Ghent area years ago, I'm totally unfamiliar with it from a canoeing perspective. Would love to hear your experience with local waters and access points. We have such a wealth of water in the region and it's such fun to explore.

    Introduction from upstate/Adirondacks NY

I'm in Troy but spend time in Lake George every week chasing grand kids. I try to steal away for a few hours whenever I'm there so I don't go too far. NW Bay, Luzerne, Jabe, Schroon River above Warrensburg, Spiers Falls. I'm looking for some new spots this season, scoped a few out over the...

    Aging Adjustments

At 70, balance seems to have become an issue for me lately. To be clear, I am not a long distance paddler; just beginning my sixth season of recreational canoeing, long afternoons, not much more than that. I'm sticking closer to shore on these spring days while I try to sort this out. It's a...

    Introduction from upstate/Adirondacks NY

Yes, stayed at Silver Bay a couple of times years ago. One of my favorite places to noodle around and fish for an afternoon is up the mountain at Jabe Pond. The Firebird will probably first get wet on the Schroon River. Was looking at the Phoenix also, but decided that with this boat I'd make it...

    Introduction from upstate/Adirondacks NY

After talking to the folks at Nstar in Nov, I decided to take a leap of faith and order the Firebird pack. Raquette River had one in their spring allocation and were able to revise the configuration for me. Hopefully will be seeing it mid-May.

    Introduction from upstate/Adirondacks NY

When I inherited my grandpa's hand tools and hardware collection it included several cans of BLO which he apparently used on everything around the homestead in VT. It wasn't until I dug into it that I realized it wasn't the greatest thing for gunnels even though alot of people have longstanding...

    Introduction from upstate/Adirondacks NY

Hey. Yes, very satisfied. Having owned a Slipstream Impulse 13 in the past I appreciate the added stiffness in the Boreas due to the foam in the bottom. I don't use it for camping but have heard good things from people who use it for that. It doesn't have the sophisticated hull design of my...

The Latest Dope on Mosquito Dope: DEET vs. Picaridin

Big fan of Insect Shield clothing; lasts for years, no reapplying every 7-8 washings. As far as DEET/Picaridin goes, I've always followed Consumer Reports results. They seem to lean towards DEET as being more consistently effective but there is variation among specific products. Surprising to...

    Bivystick

Hope someone will chime in; I'm curious about this also. I see that they dropped the price $100 but now require a four month subscription - not a bad deal at all. Can't quite wrap my head around the day to day practicality/ease of actually using it.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

Beautiful canoes. Ordered a Firebird pack config for spring. Have run out of room to hang in my small garage, but will figure something out.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

I adapted Placid Boatworks hanging design based on materials at hand; it's an inexpensive effective design. https://placidboatworks.com/storage/

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

When I retired at 64 I started doing easy to moderate hiking trails around Lake George area in the southern Adirondacks. When it started getting hot on those July day hikes I decided it was time to get out on the water. Started looking at kayaks and someone told me about ultra light kevlar...

    Considering Northstar Firebird pack

Right, they do not show the pack configuration but will build any of their solos that way. Spoke to a dealer who has sold a couple in this config, so I know there are a few out there. I've posted in a couple of FB groups, but haven't been able to track anyone down yet. Thanks for the videos...

    Considering Northstar Firebird pack

Yes, definitely special order. Thanks for the comments about how it would handle in the wind; I was guessing it might be a challenge. Good point about paddling position; I need to find out a bit more about their seat - not sure how high it is off the bottom from website pictures.

    Considering Northstar Firebird pack

I was wondering if someone here has experience with the Firebird as a pack canoe. It's not a configuration that any dealer near me would ever stock, so a dealer demo is pretty much out impossible; it would need to be a special order. If anyone has paddled or owns one I would love to hear your...
