    Where Are All The Canoes?

I've also been struck at the number of kayaks and SUPs in the Daks lately. Not that there aren't still plenty of canoes, but even on Lake Lila with a long walk to the put in, I saw one SUP (apparent daytripper) and several folks carting in kayaks and camping gear on a portage trail that was not...

Madawaska Flow and Lower Quebec Brook (ADKs)

Hi folks, I'm wondering if anyone has been into Madawaska Flow and Quebec Brook recently? This post online indicates the east access is closed for storm damage. Can a person line or pole up the Lower Quebec Brook from the Blue Mtn Rd access point? What are conditions like on Lower Quebec...

    Drying the inside of flotation?

Good tips, thanks scoutergriz. I don't actually have an air compressor, but I should look at the ability to disassemble, clean, and repair the valves. I think the dump valve itself is actually what's leaking, but more tinkering is needed.

    Drying the inside of flotation?

Alcohol - also a great idea Bob, thanks! As for pumps...makes sense. I'm a little torn on the whole thing - it would be logical to just replace the bag since I'm not totally convinced it would hold air during a bad pin. But at the same time I don't actually get on anything above Class I...

    Drying the inside of flotation?

Also a good idea, Glenn. My concern with the mold inside would be accidentally inhaling some while inflating it, as there's no backflow valve on the inflator tube. This could be easily avoided by being conscientious while inflating, but sometimes I'm in a rush.... I'd also wonder if mold would...

Good thoughts, thanks Alan and Ralph!

    Drying the inside of flotation?

So, the short version* of the question is: I got water inside my bow float bag - how do I get it out and dry it to avoid a mold farm? The bag has an inflation valve at the end of a tube and a dump valve that has to be squeezed or have something jammed in to keep it open. I'm trying to...

    'new' Bell Morningstar

Sadly mine hasn't gotten much use this year. Still too scared to take it on my rocky poling creek to see what happens to the gel coat. I really do scrape a lot of rocks while poling - the creek is often borderline too shallow. Mine has the solo seat in front of the stern seat, pretty far back...

Squeezed in a lap around the pond before work. The scattered showers left just enough of a gap at just the right time today.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

Well, I finally got around to building a rack on casters, inspired by @Carp 's design. It's a bit ugly but all the lumber and the pipes were random materials I already had in the garage. The gap between the middle and top rows looks excessive, but allows you to flip the middle boat over for...

Tripping Sights and Sounds You Miss

What many others have said. I'll add: the feeling of truly not having anywhere be to at any particular time. At home, there's always something I should be doing. During parts of a trip I have the luxury of lounging.

Just found this out of the way place to paddle

I've also seen concentrations of gators in Okefenokee and the Everglades during times of low water. Gators and bears are similar for paddlers in my view. Common sense and healthy respect, and not surprising each other, means paddling can be done with reasonable safety. Habituated bears and...

    NFCT Northstar B 16 raffle

I mostly consider it a donation. Winning would be icing on the cake (to understate it). But, it'd be nice if rules were posted.

@MyKneesHurt curious to hear how the SOF held up on the NFCT? Did you build it? I imagine a boat takes a lot of use (and abuse?) on a longer trip....

Quick paddle on the local pond before work. Mist + wildfire haze obscuring the sun.

Were you wearing a wetsuit, or drysuit? Curious to hear your experience dumping so early in the year. I'm often out then but stick to flatwater since I don't have either wet or drysuit.

    Paddling with carpal tunnel syndrome

For those of us still chained to a desk, I found an ergonomic keyboard and especially a vertical mouse very helpful. I also got a rightie and a leftie mouse and switch periodically. Learning curve on the left mouse but got used to it. That helped a lot. As for paddling...
