Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

Here's an (almost) proper reaction by a gator to humans not too far from me earlier this year. I say almost because the gator should have not been brave enough to come out of the lake in the first place with so many people around.

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

It was most likely fed by humans, either on purpose or by accident (food carelessly left around or improperly disposed of). Gators learn that humans are a source of food and then approach humans when hungry. We're especially dry in Florida right now, so the gators are probably fighting for...

That is a pretty good article about gators.

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

Saw this news story today: Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida: "He tried to fight the gator off" It is unusual for an attack like that. It is the end of the dry season here, so the gators are packed into smaller areas competing for food. Once the...

Article: "101 Inspirational Paddling Quotes We Know You’ll Love"

I like to quote Biff from Back to the Future when he says, "Let's make like a tree and get outta here" Unfortunately, a very small percentage of people get the reference to the movie and the rest think I'm an idiot. :)

The effect of tariffs on the paddling industry

From RAKA's website: And this for domestic (US) sales tax: So a cross border shipment would have the recipient responsible for paying any tariffs. Local customs office will probably hold it until payment. State sales tax would be paid by the customer to RAKA, who would then forward the money...

Weather: Was it colder when you were a kid?

I'm sure many of you are aware of the Nenana Ice classic in Alaska where people place bets on when the ice will melt in the spring. One interesting side effect of this event is that we have accurate data back to 1917. It makes for an interesting chart: As you can see, the ice-out is occurring...

What do you think about the idea of having vendor forums?

IMHO, I think a separate forum is unnecessary. Vendors are already welcome to comment on existing threads about their products, and can start new threads whenever they want. I suspect a "vendor" section will become a "dead zone" with very little activity.

    Hurricanes

Please don't jinx it. 🤞 Today is the climatological peak of hurricane season. The good news is that hurricanes are less likely every day from here on out. The bad news is that we're only halfway through the season. There is still plenty of time for damaging hurricanes to hit. Also, there's...

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

Did you drive all the way home with the broken shock mount? Thanks for the great write up. I enjoyed following along "live" and then reading "the rest of the story" as someone famous once said.

    Hookaroon

My first thought is some kind of threaded connector on each end of the pole and then you could have an assortment of "tools" that could be attached to each end, including maybe a paddle that could be used in an emergency.

    Seat height for tripping canoes.

I, too, like a raised seat. I paddled my new-to-me NW Solo with the factory 4 inch drops, but found it too low and uncomfortable to me. I am in the process of installing the kneeling drops instead, which is a 2 inch drop in the front and 1 inch drop in the back. If that still doesn't work I'll...
