New gear for 2024 and 2025?

I am in need of a new GPS unit since mine quit during my last trip. I would like to get my current one repaired - needs the power button replaced. Garmin no longer offers repair services for my unit. Other than that I don’t really need any new gear. In fact, I really need to go through my stuff...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

As memaquay points out, portages which have not been used/cleared in years will have grown in. Since the Wabakimi Project’s last organized trips were conducted in 2018, many of the routes we worked on are no longer passable. One of my favorite one week routes not far from Armstrong ON was...

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

I’d vote for northern Minnesota and not because of the BW, which I mostly avoid. But because I could much more quickly access Ontario and Manitoba. Currently, I reside in SE Wisconsin between Chicago and Milwaukee so any drive to Canada is 10+ hours for me, just to get to the border. I guess I...

Knudsen Knupak canoe portage frames and bags for sale in Vermont

I still have a pack frame with the pack from the early 1970’s when I first started backpacking. I don’t know that I ever will but it seems that I could probably fabricate the cradles for the top of the frame. Certainly would be a lot cheaper as opposed to the prices being asked for these items.

    Best & worst campsites ever?

As a long time traveler in the Wabakimi area, I was surprised that we almost always found suitable campsites for 4 people/2 Timberline 4 person tents. And Wabakimi is noted for few campsites. There were occasions when we had to bushwhack campsites - some were okay after a bit of prep work and...

Kevin Callan's 91 (!!!) Rules for Wilderness Canoe Camping

We used a 30 meter tape and were strictly supervised and expected to ensure the tape was laid flat on the tread so we got an exact measurement. Wabakimi Project standards on portages started to decline once Uncle Phil became too feeble to walk back and check our work.

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

Outstanding TR, very enjoyable reading and viewing. As a frugal canoeist you may want to consider a trip in Manitoba - no crown land camping fees.

Kevin Callan's 91 (!!!) Rules for Wilderness Canoe Camping

I spent 12 years/23 weeks of trips in the greater Wabakimi area accurately measuring portages for the Wabakimi Project. You are welcome.

What's your morning routine on canoe trips?

Gee, memaquay you sound like you would fit right in with my group of misfits, 50/50 Canadian and the states. The old guard of the Wabakimi Project, all of whom apprenticed under the tutelage of Uncle Phil.

    Your emergency canoe repair kit?

Regarding Flex Seal tape - my daughter bought a real fixer-upper of a house which is sided with what is probably some of the first vinyl siding available. It is so old it is brittle. I have used Flex Seal tape to patch it a number of spots and am amazed at how well it works and holds up to...

9 Top Canoe Packs & Barrel Harnesses

My stuff is almost all Duluth Pack, but I purchased the first of them over 50 yrs ago and the last of them maybe 15-20 yrs ago. And at nearly 77 yrs of age, I will not be making any further investments in this gear. On a recent trip I carried a friends Ostrom pack several times and I really like...

Replacement Vinyl/Aluminum Gunwales available retail in Maine?

Too bad you are in the east. I have stashed several pair of Disco gunwales in the rafters of the equipment bldg at the local nature center. Since I do the boat repairs, I save all boat parts that look like they might have some future use. I have been doing this long enough that the center is...

"Sleigh riding" big swells in OC-6 outrigger canoes

My daughter was in a military family and when her husband was stationed in Guam for 3 years she joined the local outrigger canoe club. I remember going out with them on early morning practice sessions in the Philippine Sea. They never paddled in anything like the seas shown in the video. But I...

    Weatherproof Gear Boxes and Cases

Not exactly waterproof, but water resistant as long as it stays upright. These are no longer produced but apparently popular as I have gotten offers to sell it. Handy for bulky gears like stoves, lanterns, etc.
