Questions for my trip to Labrador and Newfoundland

On your way back, turn South early. Either go through Sherbrooke and Magog to pick up I91 in VT before heading back West; or, drive the other end of the 138 and follow it all the way to the Trout River/Constable border, and then follow 30 down to I88. This takes you through Paul Smiths, Saranac...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

When I was about 9 my grandfather set me loose with a Ciro 35 rangefinder. He also gave me a little hand-held light meter but I became good enough to know what settings were required based on the subject, environment, and film speed I was shooting. I was taking technically good pictures within a...

    Northern WI wolf attack

Teenage grammar/quotes aside, that article is an atrocity. Someone got paid to write that.

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

I'm really not one to judge as I'm sure I could use some more practice, but if it works for you and you're enjoying yourself, I'd say you're doing fine. If you want to try something different that should improve efficiency, try turning your wrist down instead of up at the end of your stroke...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I encountered the exact opposite in Algonquin Park: someone had cut down spruce trees, processed them into 4' billots, and stacked them by the fire pit. There were about 10 of these, 8-10" in diameter, cut with a (presumably electric) chainsaw. Perched on top were 6 "fresh" eggs. Some people...

    Bumps in the night

Bump-bump, rustle-rustle-rustle. BUMP, bump-ba-bump, rustle-rustle-rustle. "Did you hear that?" "Yeah." "Well what was it?" "No idea." My wife deemed my response unsatisfactory. Sigh. Glasses, headlamp, shoes and off I go. I'm scanning - slightly concerned that the creature is doing likewise...

    So you think you're a fisherman/canoeist,

Ah yes, the old "foot arch shin draw" stroke.

Kevin Callan's 91 (!!!) Rules for Wilderness Canoe Camping

Canadian Smarties aren't American Smarties - we call those "Rockets". Our Smarties are pretty close to M&M's, just different milk chocolate.

    1st Knife Recommendations

That's tricky, but I think you've got something with the Opinel. At that age (and depending on the kid) it may get lost or abused. Otherwise I'd offer that Great Eastern Cutlery and their Tidioute line have some very nice little pocket folders.

    Defend your food barrel?

It depends on the animal... Check out the following video - especially the caption at 19:25.

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Negundo (boxelder) maple. Home to the boxelder bugs that use my home as their winter get-away. And @Bob B. - we have that stuff around here, too. I go woodcock hunting and come back looking like I wrestled a bobcat.

    Wind threshold

Canoeing aside, wind just makes me irritable - I hate it. On a trip, a steady wind is one thing - not less dangerous - but it's there and you can account for it unless it appears out of nowhere. What I really dislike is what I call "black water" - that tight shimmer from a very localized gust...

    What3words?

It's actually been around for a while now. I believe Mercedes integrated it with their navigation systems starting in 2020 model years - not sure if they're still using it. My garage has a cool name: the Shovel Croak Gatehouse.

    Cooking Fish

I'll likely get skewered for this - boil it. Yeah, I know - sacrilege, but think of it as a chowder. And: no special cookware required; more nutrients retained; way easier to clean up; and no billboard-like advertisement to every animal within 2 miles.

    2-Man Tent Recommendations

Tarptent Scarp II - it was made in the US at the time. I believe they moved some production off-shore. It's a tight 2-man, though.

    Underwear

Stanfields. I wear a long sleeve, merino base-layer shirt about 90% of the time - sometimes by itself. I love that thing. Their fleece top and long johns serve as bed clothes and could also be a base layer if it got very cold and I had to remain stationary (I couldn't imagine wearing these while...

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

This habitual bumbler would lose a removable yoke if it wasn't tied around my neck. I'd want to add a tether of some-sort. Looks great, though!

Budget Stripper or Wood/Canvas Builds: How to Save Costs

The biggest hurdle for me was fear of failure. I spent a long time wondering whether or not building a cedar strip was something I would be capable of doing. I've given up on a lot of pursuits because I just didn't find them interesting/rewarding enough to justify the effort (learning guitar...

My first build - Bob Special

On the hull, as I went. The only care I took was to make sure to alternate the location of the joints from row to row - offset by one form at least. Feel free with the questions - we are here to help. Edit: A miter box with a back saw was always close at hand during the stripping process.
