    What are you reading?

About 20 years ago I was foundering in the Arlanda (Stockholm) for a book in English to read on the flight back to the US. Totally unaware, I picked up the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I read it straight through, all the way home.

Two days on the N. Branch, Potomac

Thanks for the nice TR and photos. I think it's important to remember the local day and weekend trips.

    Cree River Summer 2023

I think the PLB is a good option for me. There is no one at home now worried about what has happened to me. That sounds sad, but it is really a relief. My Spot is an old one that can only send out two messages I think, an OK and a Need Help. Thank you for reminding me, Modified Ottertail. I was...

So, what old item do you still use?

Yep. I was a fan. My go-to paddle is signed by the maker, Dave Kavner, and dated at 5/88. Thirty-seven years. He said it was made tough for wilderness tripping.

    What are you reading?

Joe Kane had never been in a kayak before this trip. He'd never done any river paddling. He was there to write the story, but got sucked into paddling. The read through the Black Canyon is harrowing. It was a poorly put together team, with only Chmielinksi and Truran truly being qualified.

Baskehegan Stream - Topsfield to Danforth, ME

Looks like a lovely trip! It's a good trip report if it makes me wish I could go there. Maybe I will. It's been decades since I have been to Maine.

    What are you reading?

I have just re-read Joe Kane's Running the Amazon which reports on the first descent of the Amazon River from its source high in the Andes Mountains in Peru on a river named Apurimac to the Atlantic Ocean. It was done with kayaks and a raft, but was still extremely interesting. Holes where the...

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

When I paddled Juniper Springs, it was closed to any kind of swimming, snorkeling, or even getting out of your boat. It wasn't because of gators. They were trying to keep the spring water clean.

Megiscane Misery & The Clash: Trip Report spring 2025

What a lousy run of luck with all the ice and frozen weather. But I am very glad you all got out safely. I still think I am going to try to run this river this summer. It sounds like there wasn't too much development at least on the upper reaches. It's nice to know the pourvoirie at Monet is...

Alligator attacks, kills woman canoeing with her husband on lake in Florida

Bolding mine. I would gather that getting bumped is not unusual if you paddle close by in shallow water. (I am currently searching for more info on the Okeefenokee. I was there maybe 30 years ago. I’m thinking about starting in the NE part of the swamp and head SW and into the headwaters of...

Finding and remotely locking a lost smart phone

Thank you Glenn. I’m having a problem charging my phone. Your post gave me the idea to switch the eSIM back to my most recent phone and Yay! it worked. The texts did not come over, however. But no worries. It solves the immediate problem.

Thank you Alan and Boreal Birch for your support. I assure you and everyone that I am amazingly happy and enjoying being solo.

Finding and remotely locking a lost smart phone

It’s good to know these things. Thank you, Glenn. I guess it means you always need to have two of the darn things.

There can never be enough pictures of the Adirondacks. Beautiful. Thank you.

    Cree River Summer 2023

The Last Exciting Run I remembered it being about a six hour drive. My memory was wrong. It was closer to 10 plus hours. I peeled out of Stony Rapids and remarkably did not stop for gas. I just wanted to get out of town. Driving was okay during the day. There was not much traffic. I saw a...

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River - Last Entry - Part 1 September 2023. Here again, my dates are unclear. Morning dawned clear, bright and 35 degrees F. I went back to bed. Later the morning sun warmed the bottom of the tent wall on the river side. I peeked out ready to pull back the tarp, but the direct sunlight is...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

I'm glad you made it out safe. Sorry the weather was not more cooperative. When I paddled the Megiscane, most of the beaches had an inner campsite well away from the water. This was decades ago of course. I was glad I could camp on the beaches when I went through. I'm looking forward to...

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

I leave spiders alone in my house for the same reasons. I do help the large hunting spiders to the door. They aren't going to find enough to eat in my home. I even left a black widow in place for a summer. She wasn't bothering me any. She was outside but near the door and on the lanai.

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

A terrible disappointment. I know how it feels to have to cut short a long awaited trip.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

My understanding is that spiders use venom to kill or paralyze their prey. But most spiders do not have the physical equipment to bite into human skin nor the venom strength to cause major damage. For some reason, those really large spiders do not frighten me. I don't handle them, but they are...
