Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

Traveling in my truck to a put in for a canoe journey I rarely bring any kind of cooler , but on occaion have a used a little one to keep sandwiches cool. I traveled with a guy who took a cooler with dry ice to keep his post trip beverages cold. When the trip was over he could enjoy a...

Hiking trails on canoe lakes / routes

My dog Jake and I often like to climb large rock outcrops and ridges when on a trip. Sometimes we hike portage trails. My wife, Jake and I are heading to Florida this Friday to paddle various springs and look for manatees. Our destinations on this trip include hiking trails . Hoping for...

    Bannock Sacrilege

I like to make mine with either wheat flour or cornmeal. I use lard with a little salt, baking powder …occasionally cinnamon and raisins. I guess one is never to cut with a knife. I look forward on layover days to lots of coffee, bannock with spray butter and honey. Good food is comfort...

How is your winter so far?

Our snow pack is gone ... my 3 plus miles of snow shoe trail ... vanished. Bulbs are starting to wake up ... perfect weather for my firewood production season ... until today. 3 inches of heavy wet yuk! Slush everywhere and temps will slowly sink into the 20s for a couple days, which will...

    Swede form vs. boat trim.

Swede form vs symmetrical ... I remember many excellent paddlers telling me my old timey ways are ridiculous, Swede form is the only way a serious tripper should travel - it is faster, quicker, more efficient ... etc. I suppose they are correct, but those attributes are not what does it for me...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Well ... with temps drastically warming and rain on the way, Jake and I made what may be our last snow shoe trek ( at least for a while ) up to winter camp. After hanging out for a bit, I put the bucket cap on top of my chimney, then we walked a good bit enjoying the snowy wintery woods and the...

Care & feeding of cold handle frying pans

Hey Snapper, LOVE the stove buddy!! That Crawford stove is crackling ( pun intended )! Seriously, if I was ever to build a cabin or redo my home, that is the kind of stove I enjoy looking at as much as using. Good on ya figuring out how to post pictures. The second pic is my favorite … more...

Care & feeding of cold handle frying pans

Well I 'll be darned, I did not think anyone had ever used ashes before except me and the old way people. Good on ya snapper. Post a pic or two of your pans as well, sitting on the wood stove. I like looking at traditional stuff like that. Bob.

Solo or small tandem (to fit the dog)

Hey Mem, you built a cedar strip Raven I think? I think you posted it paddled better than a RX built boat. How tender would that boat be with a fidgety dog? I think the Raven in cedar strip could be a good idea. Bob.

Care & feeding of cold handle frying pans

Ok, I will tell you what I do … but it will be different from every other reply you will receive. I clean the pan and it’s inside walls with hot water and a scrub brush thoroughly before I season it, then likely never again. I rub olive oil once dried on the inside and the walls of the fry...

Winter camp is ready to go.

We have 80 acres. to get winter camp it is literally up hill the entire way there. My house is nearly in one corner of our property and on a diagonal to just about the furthest opposite corner is where these pines are, thus winter camp. Due to steep valleys and ridge tops I can not walk a...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Great question about the water. I have a steel kettle, a large steel coffee pot ( percolator ), and a steel water jacket with spout I can hang on the side of the stove. It is ok when it freezes, it thaws easily, quickly on the stove. Making coffee or hot chocolate is a luxury to enjoy after...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Split some fire wood, got my stove blasting and when warmed up some I collected kindling for my future outings. What a great day to be in the timber ... just miss my old buddy Jake. It is just too darn cold for him to join me ... and boy is he pissed I left him home.
