    Ashes Solo Trip build

Your interior looks better than most of mine. A light sanding and varnish, call it a day. Or better yet, roll on a couple of coats of tremclad, there's a nice forest green.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Where I live, the threat of fire is just as important as the lack of fire. Our summers are ruled by fire or the absence of fire. During dry summers, there is a strange juxtaposition of abundance and scarcity. Fires will be burning all around us, often out of control. The air will be thick with...

    Tree Damage

I haven't heard that word used by anyone other than myself since I left the east coast. My grandfather was from new Brunswick, and that's where I first heard it, such a good word, especially when combined with "That Big Feelin So and So will get his comeuppance soon". My apologies, on to the...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Back in the day I was a single carry guy. It was the only way to go when you had to worry about dodging dinosaurs on the portage trail. I kept it simple. I had a big Seal Line dry bag, and everything went in there. I found on solo trips I never really ate much, as I usually paddled from dawn...

Sultan to Gogama: A Saga of Seven Rivers

If the road does not improve, starting at Santoy might be the norm. I'll know more in the spring.

I do it pretty much the same way Mark does.

    Ashes Solo Trip build

I run my cloth across the interior hull, I usually have 60 inch rolls, so a solo is usually 3 pieces. I'm not out to win any beauty awards with my canoes. I find this method to be quite a bit easier than a full sheet, if you develop bubbles or wrinkles, it is much easier to work them out.

Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit Late Autumn 2024

Lol, I did retire, five years ago, but I keep getting called back. One of these years soon.

Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit Late Autumn 2024

Yes, thanks for the great read! If I ever retire, it's on my list, looks like probably one of the most scenic canoe trips in Canada.

Sultan to Gogama: A Saga of Seven Rivers

Fantastic trip report! I really enjoyed it, started reading it last night, finished it this morning with my coffee. I should have kept a list of the comments I wanted to make, there was just so much info, lol. I'm wondering if you ever contemplated taking a small chainsaw? Most of our trips...

    Northern WI wolf attack

This dream of existence that we all share is individualized by our own unique subjective conditioning. I lived for two years on a fly in reserve many miles north of my current location. Most people would consider the location to be in the middle of a vast wilderness. Human impact was minimal...

    Save the Moose Campaign 2024

Ok, so video links finally fixed, in case anyone wants to check it out. Imugr doesn't seem to work for their video links, youtube is still fine.

    Save the Moose Campaign 2024

Yes, I tried several different links supplied by imugr, none worked. Maybe I'll try again.

    Save the Moose Campaign 2024

Lol, I don't want all that work, not even sour grap'in. Anyone know how to link video files?

    Save the Moose Campaign 2024

The Save the Moose Campaign 2024 kicked off to a great start on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. It might be a bit of a stretch to call this a canoe trip, as it was our first time taking the big 20 foot freighter, with a mighty 2.5 horse engine on it. Then again, it might be a bigger stretch...

    Wood identification.

I think I'm still leaning toward some kind of mahogany due to the size of the stock. As I mentioned earlier, I have one piece that is 22 inches wide, 14 feet long, and not a knot in it. Might give it a whirl building a solo canoe if my contract is extended into the spring.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

Thanks for the report, looked like a very nice trip. I've gotta quit working in the fall. Anyone claim the weed yet, lol?

Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit Late Autumn 2024

Really enjoying this so far, the Bowron has been on my bucket list for many years. Looking forward to your next installment. Can't help you with the editing stuff, but I'm sure Glenn will be along soon with assistance.

    Wood identification.

Stripped up some of the mystery wood. Not sure what it is again. Quite light, sort of open grained, and quite stiff. Don't think it's poplar now. Also fairly brown in colour. Some form of mahogany?
