Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

Thanks for filling me in on those cisterns. It did cross my mind that it was a water source, but I thought it was a lot of infrastructure for a water supply for the amount of people in the area. The pond did seem to be spring fed as there was no stream coming into it that I noticed. The train...

Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

One of the things I like about tripping are the images I see. It's mostly scenery and sometimes wildlife. Sometime I can capture it on film and sometimes it's just a memory, but the Adirondacks always comes through for me. It's one of the places that I find so beautiful that I can't stop taking...

    Thigh Straps for Seated Canoeing?

In your OP you mentioned raising your seat. I don't know what boat you paddle, but it may be a solution. It will allow you to kneel or just keep your feet under the seat while remaining seated without as much potential of entrapment. By staying seated and "grabbing the bottom of your seat with...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but has anyone had success with a single carry when traveling with two people in a tandem boat? It seems like it would be easier then when solo.

What do you use for a table?

When I don't have a table along I use a small piece of a tarp placed on the ground. I can empty the contents of my food bag on it keeping it out of the dirt.

Are You Prepared to Confront Spider Bites?

I didn't like this guy being in my boat. Luckily I was able to get him to climb onto my paddle blade, then I shook it off outside the boat. I think I read that all spiders are venomous.

    Day Trip, Apthorp Lake, Florida

That looks like a great place to escape to Erica. I always found Florida to be an interesting place to paddle.

What is your local day paddle?

I thought I'd revive this thread to post about a local day paddle I took a few days ago. I returned to the Francis Walter Dam and Lehigh River hoping to do a little poling and fishing. I got a late start at 2:00 PM and there was a sense of foreboding as I loaded up and pushed off. It may have...

That’s a special window. I believe it’s the one they use in their hunting blinds to shoot out of, so I always have that.

Glenn, I'm getting too old to make that 6 hour drive to the Adirondaks and put in a good day on the water on the same day. As far as the rack, I may experiment with a rack on the cab as it's hard to tie off the bow where it is now. Canube, the owner that conceived of the idea uses his for road...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I think you have it pretty well covered, but why worry about bringing such a light boat. Surely a good women can carry more than that.

This is my new set up. The box in my truck bed is an insulated sleeping "camper" made by Tusca Outdoors. They are in the business of making deer hunting blinds and one of the owners built one for himself to take on road trips. He liked it so much they now produce them for sale. It weighs less...

I apologize if any of my responses conflicted with your requested topic guidelines, although it looks like you got pissed off before I posted. If you post in the future be sure to put your guidelines in bold print so we will be aware of them.

    Outboard

Check out Island hopper outboards. They used to make small gas canoe motors. Now they call them kayak motors. They also have a lot of electric motors too. They have a 35cc Honda four stroke that puts out 2.5 hp. It has a built in gas tank and only weighs 19lbs.

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

That is true when you have a level trim, but do the same thing when stern heavy and you will turn towards the side you are leaning towards. It's like how a motorboat leans when turned.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Something to think about is a canoe pole is also called a "setting" pole. If I remember correctly it is called that because you "set" yourself in the eddy as opposed to doing an eddy turn. I would think it more closely resembles a ferry then a turn so you don't want too much angle relative to...
